I am in a 14 team H2H keeper league...the scoring system is pretty standard (-1 for k's). I have been rebuilding for a couple of years and finally have myself in a place to compete. I traded some young talent for Holiday and Bedard(got him for Neftali Feliz). We keep 12 major league players 2 rookies and 3 minor leaguers. We start one player at each position for the week and a DH. Most weeks you are shooting for 6 starts(162 for the year). You can use up to 6 pitchers and only 1 relief pitcher. Here is where I am at...
C - Soto (rookie) 1B- Chris Davis (rookie) 2B - Ian Kinsler 3B- Chipper OF - Matt Holiday OF - Nick Markakis OF - Bobby Abreu SP - Erik Bedard SP - Javier Vazquez SP - Carlos Zambrano SP - Roy Oswalt SP - Chris Young RP - Mariano Rivera
Minor Leaguers - Tommy Hanson, Jeremy Hellickson, James McDonald
Those are guys that I am planning on keeping. That leaves me with one 1 major leaguer left to keep. Here are my options:
Mike Pelfrey James Loney Michael Young(I drafted him in the 2nd round of last years free agent draft) Sin Chin-Choo Jayson Werth.
I had been planning on keeping Pelfrey, but now I am reconsidering and thinking about keeping Loney. What do you think?
honestly, i think i keep both pelfrey and loney, and toss back carlos zambrano or roy oswalt...i didnt like what i saw out of either last season and really thought pelfrey turned a corner
if you arent keen on that idea (and id understand why) i keep pelfrey, as i think he is the better player of the two, and would be a better option to keep for the future
Z - My wife is a huge Cubs fan and I having Z makes her tolerate fantasy baseball better..thus he stays. Plus he is a very consistet point scorer which is one of the most important things in our league.
Oswalt - I think you need to re-evaluate Oswalt. Here is his line after the All-Star break - 12 starts 10-2 2.24 ERA 1.01 WHIP...he isn't going anywhere.
Your reasoning on Pelfrey is why I was leaning towards keeping Pelfrey, but my weakness going into next year is 1B - I love Davis but his strikeouts could make him ineffective in our league.
I am relatively high on Pelfrey coming into the season, but I still think he's your 4th best option of the guys you listed. I'd probably take Werth first, then Loney, but I couldn't argue with either of them. Michael Young's a decent option too depending on what SS are being kept.
Thanks for the advice. I hadn't considered the Werth angle because I just traded two outfielders(Kemp and Ellsbury). But that could make sense for me. I am need of a DH and SS. If I keep Werth all I would need is a SS. I like that idea. What do you guys think about Werth? Do you think he will continue to improve or will his ratios from last year be his peak?

I don't think you can reasonably expect him to improve over last year. I kind of look at him at this year's version of Corey Hart. Everyone sees the 20/20 and thinks....oooh, he could go 30/30. Well, I think that's expecting too much probably, but there certainly isn't anything wrong with another 20/20.
The Jays got rid of Werth during a time when they actually needed outfield depth... they thought that little of him. He's likely to only find his way into the line up against lefties. Jenkins should work out his kinks from last season and they will end up in a platoon situation. Pelfrey might just be a late bloomer, maybe he has something there. Pitching is far to deep to hang on to him and hope, based on abilities that he's shown no indication of at the major league level though. Cut 'em both.
