Ervin Santana To Miss Opening Day?

Postby Snakes Gould » Sun Mar 08, 2009 1:48 pm

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday that he doesn't expect Ervin Santana to be available for the start of the season.
It's still unclear what's going on with Santana, as the Angels haven't released the results of an MRI taken on Saturday. They had been dismissing the right-hander's sore elbow as a routine spring issue, but Scioscia's statement indicates it's more than that. With Santana out, two pitchers from the group of Dustin Moseley, Nick Adenhart and Shane Loux would open the season in the rotation. Here's one more team that should be looking at Pedro Martinez.

....and it's a tear.

Bad news on Ervin Santana. He has a “small” tear in his UCL. He’ll rest and undergo treatment before a decision is made on the next step. Surgeons disagree on how complete a tear must be before doing Tommy John surgery, in large part because every arm is different. More, the forces put on those arms are different. Santana’s going to be risky, even if he’s able to come back. Very few pitchers are effective in the short term, with many showing control issues. He’ll start the season on the DL to be sure, though there’s a lot of uncertainty for anything beyond that.

Fantastic. There goes my stacked rotation in my 20 teamer. Ervin, Liriano, Lester, Greinke, Danks, Scherzer and Jurrjens led my staff (Blackburn, Cecil and Rowland-Smith are also on my team). I kept buying pitchers because they were good deals and I recently traded Liriano for offense. Oh well I still have good pitching. Hopefully one of Ervin or Scherzer can have a relatively healthy season.
