You need to get more. Big Erv is a huge risk compared to Fielder. He has no track record other than last season.

How is he any more of a risk than someone who claims to become a vegetarian and then gains 50 pounds of pure fat. I truely think Fielder will have a very short MLB career and his value will quickly plummet much like we saw with Andruw Jones. However he still should have a very good season this year. Value for Value the trade is pretty even. Look at your team and determine which is a greater need. Personally, If I had Ervin, I'd be looking at other options such as Berkman or Justin Morneau. Ervin is exactly what he appears to be. He is one of the top 5 pitchers in the MLB right now IMO.

I would take it..surplus at 1B and all
while I would take fielder in a draft 1st, ervin IS for real
compare his stats to the "other" Johan last year...Joahn in the NL had same wins less k's worse WHIP (granted sizeable difference in ERA but again AL vs NL shouldnt there be a gap?)

For what it's worth, word is that Fielder has reported to ST slimmed down.
http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/39694657.htmlIt's quite possible that Fielder will decline at around 31 or 32 if he can't continue to manage his weight, but right now he's only 24 and he plays first base, which is probably the least demanding position on the field from a physical standpoint.
I like Santana too, I just tend to trust pitchers less. He's had one great year, and although it certainly looks like he's turned the corner, Fielder's the one with the more proven track record and in that line-up, you'll definitely see results.

I wouldn't really worry about Fielder's health at this point. Being a vegetarian potentially shows his willingness to control his health if anything - as long as he balances out his diet. They're both great young players who could better over the next few years. I think Fielder is the more sure bet for 40ish homers while Santana has only shown his potential in one season (after a bad 2007). I think you could try for more with that argument.

If you want E. Santana, try and get a 2nd leg thrown in to account for the value difference between him and Fielder. There is no reason to be giving up value because of excess at one position before the season.
