Failed 5-Tool OFs

Postby Havok1517 » Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:07 pm

Searching for the next can't miss hall of famers, I thought it would be fun to list those can't miss prospect 5-Tool OF prospects that swung and missed for whatever reason. I suppose there are a few guys that are currently playing that still might have a chance to rebound. But what about those 5-Tool OF prospects that crashed and burned???

Laynce Nix - still active but his great tools have not translated
Wily Mo Pena - his hole in his swing is the only thing bigger than his talent but potental still there
Reuben Mateo -was supposed to be the next big thing but accident derailed a promising can't miss prospect
Joe Borchard - how many times was this guy the top prospect in the White Sox organization? could still be a reserve
Ruben Rivera - maybe he shouldn't of stolen Jeter's bat?
Brian Anderson - Just has not been able to deal with MLB pitching
Jeremy Reed - Another failed White Sox OF prospect but has looked good this spring
Jeffrey Hammonds - Coming out of Stanford, he was a top talent though he did have a few productive seasons
Nigel Wilson - He was supposed to be a sure thing...guess not
Chad Mottola - As a Reds fan, its hard knowing that they could of had Derek Jeter in the 1992 draft instead
Adam Hyzdu - Coming out of HS, he was the next great hitter...nope

Corey Patterson should be near the top. Austin Kearns also.

How old are we talkin' here. Because Delmon Young has surely been disappointing so far...

I disagree with Willy Mo here, he was never a 5 toll prospect, no one expected him to have a high BA. 4 tolls maybe but not 5.

Hermida? From the Marlins? He was a top prospect like Young?

Jason Tyner.

Former 1st rd pick (#21 by the Mets in '98) that should have had massive power (can hit the ball 300 feet in BP) to go along with his other 4 tools. Managed only 4 HR's in 4700 MLB and MiLB AB's. Crashed and burned.

note - I am joking

Not sure how Delmon, Hermida, Pie would fit the bill since they are still very young.

I wouldn't say they're failed prospects as they've had decent careers are still reasonably young at 30 and 29 though they for sure have not been as good as advertised. I would have said Marlon Byrd until last year as well and Josh Hamilton until 2 years ago.
