Take the best available

Postby markj11 » Wed Mar 04, 2009 10:38 am

So I did a mock(10 teams) taking the best available. When is it time to abandon taking the best available? Here are my first 4 picks:
1-10 Ryan Braun (Mil - OF)
2-1 Josh Hamilton (Tex - OF)
3-10 Matt Holliday (Oak - OF)
4-1 Carlos Lee (Hou - OF)

I felt crippled the rest of the draft because there were plenty of value pick OF's out there.

"Taking the best available" is a vague phrase. Never stick to a ideological strategy. It's all about drafting the "best team" and not necessarily the "best players". But, those particular players make for a solid foundation. There are value picks at all positions. Starting off with 4 OFers definitely is a tough way to go about a draft though. I like to have more flexibility with my DH position personally. I'm interested in how you filled out the rest of your roster.

Looks good to me.

10 teams with no MI/CI and only 3 OF, position doesn't really matter that much as you will find studs off waivers.

So you're weak at 2B and 1B... you could probably trade one of your OFs for a very good 2B or 1B in a month if you want to.

I think that you already factor position availability into your rankings and therefore who you consider "the best available". So after that taking the "best available" makes sense. Now if you hide all players names and positions and just rank their projected stats with absolutely zero concern for what position they play, I think you hurt your team.

Also you have to take "best available" with a grain of salt. If your first 8 picks are all OFs you have just screwed yourself and every team you play against knows it. Good luck getting reasonable trade value. However if you reach for a 2B or a C just because you don't like ending up with the baseline player carousel, I think you're giving up value.

I was gonna say, what's the fun in playing a 10 team league? Just don't see the appeal.

Yeah, 4 OF is not the ideal way to start a draft. As you said, nobody wants to fill their OF early so there tend to be some bargain OF'ers in the middle rounds. 'Take the best player' refers more to not reaching too far to fill thin positions. But I can't fault anyone for taking Carlos Lee if he's still hanging around in the 4th. All in all you came out smelling like a rose. And plenty of OF depth if you need to trade for another position.

Considering how you handicapped yourself at the start of the draft, I think you worked it out just fine. And as Yoda said, there will be plenty of "free" value to improve your infield as the season gets rolling.

Instead of "best available" or "position conscious" why not try "common sense". Thats not meant to be a jab at anyone but I just think too many people try to make things too hard and too calculated. Just use some sense and you'll be fine! ;-D

I like to eat my Fruity Pebbles with lots of milk and let them soak a bit. I hate eating it while it's still crunchy.
