What round for Chris Davis?

Postby oldmanbean » Mon Mar 02, 2009 11:09 pm

I am in a 12 team keeper league, 8-12 keepers, $2 increase each year of ownership. I need 1b, 3b and pitching, but there is not much pitching to talk about. I was hoping to get Chris Davis, but not sure where to take him. I usually do not draft until the 4th round ($17). Is he worth that, or is it too early to tell? Below are the dollar values for each round of our draft. Where would you take him?? $200 payroll, 25 man team. If it matters, there are 6 teams that need a third baseman, and only 2 need a first baseman.

25, 23, 20, 17, 15, 12, 11, 8, 8, 6, 6, 6, 5, 5, 4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2

Keepers, $116
C R Martin 9
2B D Uggla 17
SS S Drew 10
OF J Bruce 9, J Hamilton 13, N Markakis 8, N McLouth 13
P C Lee 13, M Scherzer 9, J Shields 15

I find he's been going about the 70th pick over all

In a keeper, I wouldn't be afraid to reach in the 4th or 5th round in the draft. He's got 45 home run power and could knock in a boatload of RBIs in the middle of the Texas lineup.

6th round in a standard 12 team league. any earlier and it may not be a value pick.

I just hope no one panics and takes him earlier. I don't pick until 11th, but last year the 12th player went then (4th round), there were 35 passes!! We don't like to spend the big bucks unless there is someone to help us win immediately.

thanks for the insight

In a keeper league?? Our league tends to draft late anyway ... last year 4 1st round, 1 2nd round, 3 3rd round,5 4th round,3 5th round. So 5 rounds, 18 picks out of 60.

In a 12 team league, I think I would say the 6th round is the earliest. I might possibly go the 5th round in a keeper league, but I think that's a bit of a risk.

Well, since I pick 11th, it is almost the 5th round :-) The free agent pool is slim this year, esp at 3rd base. The top 7 are all protected. According to CBS Sportline projections, Mark Reynolds is the top one available, followed by Davis, Chipper, ZImmerman and Kouz.

Davis and Chipper when he's not hurt are easily better than Reynolds.

I am just going by their projections for our league. I would not take Reynolds if Davis were there. Only bad thing is to spend a lot on a young player, as he gets expensive quickly.

Thanks!
