If you have the number 1 pick, would you pick Albert Pujols or Hanley Ramirez? I am in an OBP league, so Pujols' strength in OBP is huge. Not that I don't like Hanley, but he is only a guaranteed lock in runs and SB. I don't have the same confidence in his swing as I do in Phat Albert's. I could see Hanley potentially having a .280-20 HR season, but there is no way Albert would sink that low. Call me crazy, but I just don't buy into the young shortstop hype everyone else loves (Hanley and Jose Reyes).
With Albert, I feel like I have the best possible offensive player out there. With Hanley, I don't. He just happens to play a scarce position and get some nice steals.

Who the hell thinks about depth with the #`1 pick - in an OBP league I'm taking Albert's .400+ and the extra HRs/RBI and gettin' the 30 SB difference elsewhere.

With OBP as a category this catapults Albert to #1, definitely.
Hanley. When drafting on the corners, you need to look ahead.
If you sit on stolen bases, you'll end up with someone like Ellsbury, Suzuki, Tavares, Born... who knows? One dimensional players who help in one, maybe two categories but are typically bad news in the HR/RBI department.
According to rookie's MDP report, you can nab Beltran, Soriano, Pedroia, Fielder, Manny, Morneau, Upton, Lee, Quentin or Suzuki with picks 20-30. Thats a nice range for a 12-team league.
I prefer Hanley to complement the players available from picks 20-30. But that's just me - i always like my first picks to perform in as many categories as possible.

I will agree with this sentiment, although I don't think Ichiro should be in the same category as Bourn or Tavares.
I always found SB is the one category that gives everyone the most problems in a draft, so knowing that it is taken care of right away is a good feeling.
But can I make an argument against taking Pujols...no.
