Cantu or Pedro Alvarez?

Postby projectreturns » Sun Mar 01, 2009 2:42 pm

I have narrowed my choices for the first round of our keeper draft (we already keep like 20 plus farm) to Cantu and Alvarez. I was suprised Cantu didn't make someone's cut while Pedro Alvarez is shooting up prospect lists and performing well in spring so far.

Some sites I read have Alvarez pretty highly ranked.

Project Prospect has Alvarez at #4 in the Top young 3B in the game.

DobberBaseball has moved Alvarez up to #9 on their February Prospect List while they have Cantu at 71 overall for hitters.

I am feeling the pull of the Top Prospect but Cantu is still very young and a great fantasy player. I am considering these two because my only 3b in my system is Atkins. I am loaded at 1st so Cantu's flexibility isn't important to me.

What would you guys do?

if you have a competitive team now and a legit shot at winning this year i'd go cantu for sure. if you're in a rebuilding mode i'd go alvarez.

Yeah good point. I'd just hate to see Alvarez become the next Pujols or something and be sitting their with a wishy washy Cantu. I guess I am looking more longterm. What if you guys didn't take my current situation into account. Over the next say five years, who would you rather have?

Ishikawa huh? What do you expect from the kid this year?

Yeah, it's all about if you are trying to win this year. If you are, you have to snap up Cantu.

For some reason I just don't really trust Cantu. I like the idea of taking the upside and potential of Alvarez. However, as stated before, if your team is in good shape to possibly win it this year, then I can't argue against going with Cantu because of his prior success and experience. Thanks for your help with mine.
