Target strategy for my first 3 picks of Keeper league draft?

Postby twistedude » Sat Feb 28, 2009 9:25 am

Hey guys, I've got my keeper league draft coming up soon and I'd like to get your opinions on who I should be targeting with my first three picks. It's a 14 team 5x5 roto league and we keep 5 at their draft round values (so 70 players kept in total). Here are my keepers with their draft round values in brackets:

David Wright (NYM - 3B) (1)
Jason Bay (Bos - LF) (8)
Ervin Santana (LAA - SP) (21)
Carlos Quentin (CWS - LF,RF) (22)
Alexei Ramirez (CWS - 2B,SS,CF) (23)

My first three picks in the draft are #7, #17 and #21 overall. Below are the top unprotected players available in the draft. Given my keepers already, who should I be targeting? With my #7 pick, I am thinking either Pedroia, Morneau, or Peavy, and hoping that one of Ellsbury, Martin, or Soto falls to me at #17. Most of these players will be gone by my #21 pick, but I was thinking of going for one of the upside SP's towards the end of this list at that pick. Thoughts?

Albert Pujols (obv going first)
BJ Upton (will be gone)
Prince Fielder (probably gone)
Dustin Pedroia
Carlos Lee
Justin Morneau
Jake Peavy
Vladimir Guererro
David Ortiz
Ichiro
Matt Holliday
Kevin Youkilis
Russell Martin
Alex Rios
Jacoby Ellsbury
Geovany Soto
Cory Hart
Hunter Pence
Chris Davis
James Shields
Carlos Zambrano
Scott Kazmir
Francisco Liriano
Joba Chamberlain
Yovani Gallardo
John Lester
David Price
Justin Verlander
Mariano Rivera

With all of the pitchers there, I'd pass on them for now. Just get the best possible talent:

Lee, Morneau, Martin would be perfect. But, probably not possible.

What are the roster setups? If you don't have a Util, might be a waste taking Lee but you could always trade him later ...
C-Baker
1B-Lee
2B-Roberts
3B-Reynolds
SS-HRamirez
LF-Bay
CF-McCutchen
RF-Hawpe
UT-Willingham, Hairston
BN-FSanchez

SP-Lackey, Burnett
RP-Rivera, Wagner
P-Baker, Gregerson, Meche
BN-Motte

DL - Zimmerman, Volquez

Here's the roster setup: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, IF, LF, CF, RF, Util, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL

So yes, we do have a UTIL spot. But I'd really prefer not to pick an OFer (Lee) with my first pick since I'm keeping 2 already with Bay and Quentin.

I like the Morneau/Martin suggestions but I'm 99% sure Martin won't fall to my #21 pick (I'd be lucky to get him at #17). Getting Morneau would be sweet - he's the 6th highest ranked player available in the draft and I have the 7th pick, so I guess there's a decent chance. If both he and Pedroia are gone at #7, isn't Peavy the BPA there? I do realize there's alot of pitching depth available later in the draft though.

Any other suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I would take Morneau or Holliday with the #7 pick. If they are both gone then take Lee. You need to take the best available player at that spot. It looks like there is lots of pitching so don't waste the #7 pick on that.

Thanks for the help with mine.
