I try to convince people this all the time. One of my favorite examples to pull out as a Yankee fan is Mo. In 1998, when the team won 114 games, Mo had 36 saves, which was sandwiched around years with 43 and 45. Also, the 2003 and 2004 Yankees were identical teams in terms of wins with 101, yet a healthy Mo had 40 saves and 53 saves in those years, respectively. You just can't forecast save opps too accurately year to year. It seems like this year the fact is being more overlooked than normal, maybe because K-Rod's 60+ saves on a playoff team. But look at who was 2nd to K-Rod in the AL in saves...Joakim Soria for a 75 win team...ahead of Papelbon and many others on winning teams...
Mark DeRosa goes off the board right before me, so Matt Capps is the pick. Pairing Capps with Soria should allow me to compete in saves, and with Matt Cain, Rich Harden, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Cliff Lee on the staff as well, I should compete in the other pitching categories too.
9 picks before me now. Looking to fill another offensive spot with the next pick, either C, CI or OF. The top at each are:
C: Bengie Molina, Chris Iannetta, Ryan Doumit, Jorge Posada, Kelly Shoppach CI: James Loney, Conor Jackosn, Chone Figgins, Jorge Cantu, Alex Gordon, Mark Reynolds OF: Pat Burrell, Conor Jackson, Coco Crisp, Rick Ankiel, Milton Bradley
