Agent Scott Boras has denied that any Manny Ramirez deal is in place with the Dodgers, and ESPN has retracted their initial report.
Sort of. Enrique Rojas, who previously said it was agreed to, is now reporting that the two sides have "finally reached some common ground in their negotiations." That's ESPN speak for "we blew it, but we're going to do our best not to admit it." It's probably only a matter of time until something does get done here, and we'll trust SI.com's Jon Heyman, the unofficial mouthpiece of Boras Corp., to have the scoop.
The Los Angeles Daily News reports that Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers have "an agreement in principle on a two-year, $45 million contract" after meeting Wednesday morning. The deal is pending a physical exam and the newspaper speculates that he could be in Dodgers camp as soon as Thursday. Mar. 4 - 11:11 am et Source: Los Angeles Daily News
So Manny and Boras went through all this to get $5MM more in contract amount (and probably much less in real amount since it sounds like the Dodger money is deferred) than the two Red Sox options at $20MM per that was so onerous? I mean, I can see it from Boras' perspective since he wasn't Manny's agent when Manny did the deal with Boston so wasn't getting anything out of it, but from Manny's perspective..... dang. That has to be disappointing.
Basically, he didn't get any more money, just another team.
0-3 to 4-3. Worst choke in the history of baseball. Enough said.
