Draft this weekend - Criticize Strategy --> WHIR

Postby theinflatinator91 » Tue Feb 24, 2009 5:28 pm

This is a ten team head-to-head league with 15 pitching categories and 15 hitting categories.

Categories-
Hitting: R, H, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, BB, TB, E, AVG, OBP, SLG, PA
Pitching: IP, W, L, CG, SHO, SV, H, ER, HR, BB, K, ERA, WHIP, K/9, QS

This is how the empty roster looks:
Hitting: catcher, 1b, 2b, 3b, SS, OF, OF, OF, utility, utility
Pitching: starter, starter, starter, starter, starter, relief, relief, pitcher, pitcher
Miscellaneous: bench, bench, bench, bench, bench, bench, DL, DL

I have third pick and am going to draft Pujols. He will be there. First picker loves hanram's nuts, and the second picker is keeping a first baseman and always drafts A-Rod.

Who should I keep? We get one keeper that was taken after round six...Alexei Ramirez, Jason Bay, and Ryan Dempster are the good ones. I was thinking Alexei or Bay...

My Draft Plan: Best available player...
Round 1- Pujols
Round 2- Berkman (if available) or Morneau
Round 3- Fielder
I know that is three first baseman, but with those guys I will have an extreme advantage in eight of the categories and can start them all.

next rounds are difficult to predict but this is what im hoping for...
Round 4- Youk - at third
Round 5- Brian Roberts
Round 6- Furcal

Then go best player depending on OF/Pitcher...Out of the OF im looking for steals and runs. Strikeouts dominate pitching so I will go after K guys. Also, in this league saves mean nothing, so I am just going to draft set up guys instead of wasting draft picks on closers...Holds is a category so they have just as much impact and plus they usually pitch more innings...

What do you guys think?

I hate leagues like this.. Formats like this value leadoff batters heavily and you will definitely want to target a speed guy who hit lots of triples. 1 Triple can win that category for the week. I would suggest using a custom cheatsheet compiler and target specific categories and punt others like saves.

Well Granderson was the number two guy in the league last year for triples (behind only Reyes)

I love the idea of taking Albert if there, although as was said 1 3B can win a cat for the week so I would consider Reyes. He will also help you win SB and PA, and the power/BA guys are going to be available throughout the draft.

If you can get maybe 2 or 3 real speedy leadoff guys, you should focus on power for the rest of the draft. You don't need really great pitchers to get IP, QS, W, or Ks, and shutouts, complete games, and even W-L are really crap shoots. Maybe invest in some K guys because you do have K and K/9, and try to avoid guys that kill you in walks or HR. You don't need any great pitchers because they will help you in far less categories most weeks, but try to get guys that are really good at a few things (ks mainly) and punt the rest. You could really just draft some starters at the end of the draft like Jeremey Bonderman and Johnny Cueto, and just fill out your pitching lineup with guys that help you win ks, wins, innings, and quality starts each week and hopefully k/9. Let the other guy have WHIP, ERA, Walks, HR, and SV, and then the rest of them are just toss ups. Focus on offense and high quantity pitching and you can win this league.

BTW: as far as the keeper, I'd take Alexei.

Alexei is definitely your keeper.

I think you have a solid strategy and agree with the above poster about targeting categories.
