Setting Keepers + Michael Young's value as a keeper - WHIR

Postby plapre3 » Mon Feb 23, 2009 7:00 pm

So I think I've pretty much exhausted all trade options before the trade deadline and while I'm not 100% happy with what I have, it's time to set my keepers.

First, please consider the fact that we must keep 5 and can keep up to 10. However, each costs a draft pick in the round past 5. To wit, if I only kept 5 and everyone else kept 10, I'd have the first 5 picks in the draft. It's too much work to predict who will be kept, so I won't, but for many reasons it's looking like it's better to keep more than less.

As for the players, I'll break them into tiers in order to sort them out. Right now I'm thinking I'll keep the 1st two and one guy from the 3rd.
1st Tier: Johan Santana, Alfonso Soriano, Corey Hart, Adam Dunn, Joe Nathan
2nd Tier: V-Mart, Joakim Soria, Yovanni Gallardo, Zach Greinke
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd Tier: Michael Young (1st choice), Aubrey Huff (2nd) , Ryan Zimmerman (3rd), Alex Gordon (4th)

The thing is, while I think Young will provide decent value this year, he's pretty much worthless as a keeper in '10. Even still, will his value be worth that of essentially a pick in the top 10 rounds? His OPS has dropped 4 years in a row now and the 31-year-old only posted a mark of .741 last season. Still, 84 RBI and 102 Runs from a SS is pretty nice. On the flipside, Huff is an easy choice if he comes close to last year's stats, but that's a big IF.

As for minor leaguers, I only get to keep 5. My thoughts are keeping them in the following order:
1) Colby Rasmus (OF-Stl)
2) Matt LaPorta (1B-Cle)
3) Neftali Feliz (SP-Tex)
4) Logan Morrison (1B-Fla)
5) Josh Vitters (3B-ChiNL)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6) Michael Bowden (SP-Bos)
6x6 weekly HtH 14 team roto keeper (between 5 and 10 keepers (no time limits or costs), losing a draft pick for each after 5)
Offensive Categories: BA, OPS, RBI, HR, SB and Runs Scored.
Pitching Categories: W, S, ERA, K/IP, Quality Starts minus Losses, and WHIP
Offensive Starters: C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, 0F, 0F, 0F, UTIL
Pitching Starters: SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, RP
Bench: 10 spots
Minors: 5 "free" keepers. These players if are eligible to be kept without the loss of a draft pick and in addition to the max of 10.
Thank you all in advance and as always, leave a link.
It looks like you are hoping to use Young as a 3rd baseman rather than a SS, since you lumped him in with other 3rd baseman. I think he's an adequate guy to have in a 1 year league at 3rd (you'll have to wait until he's actually eligible though). I'd pass in your league and look towards Zimmerman or Gordon.
Actually, I didn't lump Young in with third basemen because of position; it just kinda came down to those players being the best of the rest, so to speak. I don't think Young's a keeper at third, so I'm really only looking at him as a keeper for this year at SS. I agree that Zimmerman and Gordon are likely better options at third, but I guess this decision comes down to position scarcity.
