I think the other guy you're thinking about is Jason Hammel.
It is very likely Price might not begin the season as the No.5 guy in the rotation given that the Rays are a very conservative team and I doubt they would want to rush their #1 prospect into the Majors (even though his performance towards the end of last season gives us reason to believe that he might be more ready than they think). Price will make the big club's rotation most definitely this year, more sooner than later.
why not trade one of the guys with no options left? Price will do you no good tearing up AAA, if anyone should know its the Rays wasting Longoria for 1/3 of the year last year
Price has barely spent time in the minors... for an organization like the Rays, keeping Price for an extra season is pretty big, and it will let him hone his skills and get on track before heading back to the MLB. Hurts his owners for sure, but you've gotta think long term here.

Yeah, Niemann is a solid candidate for the #5 spot in the rotation until Price is 100% ready. Price gave us a glimpse of what he was capable of late last season and there's no doubt in my mind that he will be starting this year, it's just a matter of when. I'm rooting for Price to get the spot, but the Rays have to do what's best for the organization long term.
theyll probably keep him in the minors for at least half the season or if someone in the rotation gets i njured and hes ripping up Triple A i can see him coming up otherwise prolly a no-go

I highly doubt they would keep him in the minors for half the season...

I think they do what they did with Longoria last year. Start him in AAA for a month or so and bring him up. Kaz, Shields, Sonnanstine, Garza, and Price. Niemann if any of them go down (Kaz...).

?????????????
Some people need to check their memories. Longoria joined the Rays on APRIL 12th, 2008!! In return for being willing to do that, they successfully negotiated a contract that could keep him a Ray for NINE years. And they still made the playoffs, so it cost them nothing in 2008.
If I am the Rays, the lesson from last year is that sending the player to AAA is an outstanding strategy, with almost no short-term downside and the potential for an excellent long-term payoff.

where is Deeray? That guy had the up to the minute beat on all things Rays last year. I have been looking for his posts but come up empty thus far. He would know what the Rays are going to do with David Price.
