Draft Strategy for Pick 10 WHIR

Postby ScrappyDoo » Fri Feb 20, 2009 11:09 am

I have the 10th pick in a 10 team 7x7 H2H league. The extra categories are OBP and SLG for hitters. K/9 and BAA for pitchers.

Obviously these rules favor sluggers and High Strikeout pitchers.

I'm assuming draft order would be somewhat normal and I will have to pick 2 of the following. Tex, Rollins, Hamilton, Linc, Santana, Utley.

My plan for now is to draft Tex and one of Santana/Linc since they are so valuable in this format. Then either Grab 2 bats with speed/power in the second and third or maybe another stud like Hamels or Webb if only one bat I like falls to me.

Ideas?

I'll help you out if you leave a link.

Tex, Hamilton, with Utley as the 3rd option. I do like Utley's position and his power compared to other 2Bs, but the position is also kind of deep this year.

If ADP hold true to form this looks good to me.

My draft is tomorrow night, and I'm still not sold on what I'm going to do.

To summarize, I have 10th pick, its H2H with OBP, SLG for hitters and K/9 BAA for pitchers.

Should I consider Howard here, 1B is deep but he's the only one who can realistically hit 50 HR's this year. His OBP is a little better than average and his slugging is top 5. He can single handedly win you weeks.

Lincecum is also intriguing because he provides such elite numbers across the board, especially K/9 and BAA. If I drafted him here, I would wait on SP until round 11 or so.

If Utley fell, I'd probably have to use one of the picks on him, although I doubt he'll be there.

Rollins can provide Reyes like value in such a shallow position.

Teix is pretty dependable and will post top OBP and SLG ratios.

Hamilton is an option but with only 3 OF spots and 10 teams, OF is pretty deep.

Anyone have any last minute advice?

If your league does not penalize for k's, then Howard is a good choice to look at the 10 spot (otherwise go with Tex with one of your picks). I would go Hamilton next with Rollins at the third spot.

I'd still go with a hitter here (Tex, Hamilton, Rollins, Utley). Getting a hitter that can provide in at least 6 of 7 categories is still more valuable than a SP who can contribute at best, 6 categories. With this being a 10-teamer, there's still a chance you can get one of Peavy, Halladay, Webb, and Sabathia at rounds 3/4. So, I'd try to get two hitters from the get-go.
