I like Marmol a lot as a pitcher, but I have the feeling that he's going to be a MR this year and Gregg is going to close.

I have been hearing this a lot around here, and it perplexes me a little bit - I'm all ears if I'm off base, but this just doesn't make much sense to me. Everywhere has Marmol slotted as the closer, and even with the moderately high success Gregg showed in Florida for the last 2 years, I don't see Pinella using Marmol as a setup guy for the whole season. Might Gregg steal some opportunities from him so he doesn't top 80 appearances? Absolutely. I just don't see how he won't be the closer for the overwhelming majority of the year B-)

Either way, thanks for the read! What'd ya think of the rest of 'em? :-?

well if piniella actually uses his bullpen correctly, then marmol should be used in the most high leverage situations. closers are used very poorly by major league managers so it's unlikely that it'd happen, but coming in with a lead in the 9th inning and the bases empty hardly qualifies as a the best spot to use your best reliever. Marmol will probably end up with the job just because managers like to give it to their best reliever, but it's completely incorrect to do it that way.

I couldn't agree more! I just thought this is kind of a given in the thought process of most dedicated baseball fans and that it went without saying, eh? ;-D

ya it just blows my mind how stupid journalists and managers which think otherwise actually are and how they possibly have a job that they are so bad at. you know if a manager actually did this, anytime a 3-run save was blown there would be some moron sports writers going off on how the manager should have used his best reliever in the 9th instead of with the bases loaded in the 7th inning with a 1-run lead.

Yeah, that seriously drives me crazy too! What'd ya think of my choices? I thought about going with lower profile guys, but I just got a vibe from the top-15 that two of them needed to be lowered a notch or two and that a couple on the fringe of being a #1 were worth a bump :-?
