WHIR Should I pick up these FAs?

Postby mmonteath » Tue Feb 17, 2009 4:27 pm

I am toying with the idea of making a few roster moves:
Drop Chad Qualls for Matt Capps? (I like Qualls potential but Capps is reliable)

Drop Upton for either Kouzmanoff, Maybin,Thome, Hafner, Griffey, Lowell, Drew, or Sheffield?

I expect a bounce back year from Pronk and I think Sheffield, Drew, and Lowell have one solid season left in them. The later two may be wishful thinking bc I'm a Sox fan but who knows. Also I think Griffey could be decent if he signs with the Braves and Maybin has real potential just not sure if its this year or not.

I am going to have a roster spot open up when Smoltz can go on the DL so I will probably pick one of these guys up at some point before the season kicks off. Any ideas?

I would keep Upton. He really should hit 30 homers next year, absolutely the most powerful hitter in the league.

On Capps vs. Qualls that's tough. I love Capp's 39/5 K/BB rate, however he's not going to rack up those Ks like Qualls.

I'd keep Qualls. K/GB combo with good control.

Capps could be the best closer in the MLB, the only thing limiting him is the Pirates being such a horrible team. You have to go with Qualls just for the save ops. Pronk is a nice sleeper to allow to rot on your bench while you take a wait and see approach. I actually prefer Giambi as a sleeper this season after a winter of hitting the gym hard and building himself back up to a muscular 240 lbs. However, Maybin is too enticing to allow to be snatched up by another owner. I know he stunk up the joint in his first opportunity to make some waves at the major league level, but I expect him to be much better prepared this time around.

Stick with Upton. OF seemed thinner than usual in my first couple of drafts.

I'd go Capps over Qualls for reliability, expecting that there will be huge turmoil in closers all year for 2009.
