How long to wait on a SP

Postby rails80 » Tue Feb 17, 2009 1:39 pm

20 team dynasty, SLOW draft - I've made 3 picks so far ... Hanley Ramirez, Jason Bay, Brian Roberts.

I've got the 80th and 81st picks coming up and I'm thinking about foregoing SP's for now. The top SP's are gone (12 or 13 all together)

Can I skip a SP and wait until it comes back around? (picks 120/121) ... that's 10th round in most drafts. I think I need to shore up my offense and worry about pitching later.

it depends who's available at the time. if someone like oswalt, shields, santana, lackey is there then i'd probably grab one (depending on what kind of bats are available). if they aren't then i'd probably hold off until your 6th/7th round picks.

I'd grab a Oswalt style player here if possible, you don't want to be using a bunch of 3/4 pitchers for your starting spots, you need at least 1 1/2 pitcher

I would wait and take two more hitters for now. Pitchers are easier to assemble over the season usually for most leagues but I'm not sure about a 20 team Dynasty. Are there usually pitchers that emerge during the season on the waiver wire or is it usually dry? Also how many pitchers start per team?

The league is 6x6 H2H (OPS and HLD)

We're starting:
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF, Util, Util
SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P

I had the turn pick so I drafted Chipper Jones (didn't really want to but tough to ignore his #'s when he's healthy) and James Shields. A run on pitchers is coming - I can feel it. 2 closers just went, and I have a feeling over the next 36 picks it's going to be pitcher heavy. Depending on what happens, I'll probably go position player / pitcher from here on out.

So far, I've gotten:
Han Ram (1:1)
Jason Bay (2:40)
Brian Roberts (3:41)
Chipper Jones (4:80)
James Shields (5:81)

1B-Lee

That is a nice start for a 20 team league, particularly if Chipper can give you 150 games.

If I can get 150 out of Chipper, I'd be really amazed. He hasn't done that since '03. I'm hoping a relatively healthy Chipper can give me 130-140 games of absolute production. Compared to who else was on the board, he'll more than likely equal their production in less games, and I can draft another 3B as my UTIL guy or back-up for the games he'll miss. I like Shields to win 17-20 games this year if TB can keep winning

Just a quick update - after taking Hawpe and Derek Lee in the 6th and 7th, I took Baker and Rivera in the 8th/9th. Leaving myself a little old, but don't really care too much. The guys I'm drafting should be productive this year and maybe next, and there's always another Bruce or Longoria that'll come along.

15 round prospect draft not yet started

Your draft is looking solid especially for a 20 league team. Keep us posted.

As far as being a little old, I would not worry about your team they should still be productive for the next 2 years.

Generally, I never really worry about anything further than 2 years ahead. I have been in too many keeper leagues that fizzle out after 1-2 years to spend too much time worrying about 3, 4 or 5 year plans.

I usually pick one specific pitcher each year, and when they go, I take a pitcher and begin to slowly build my rotation. Three pitchers have been going around the same time: AJ Burnett, Edinson Volquez and Chad Billingsley. So whatever point of your draft that is, I'd start looking for pitchers. Billingsley has been my targeted Ace this season.
