Mets Admit To Being Out On Pedro?

Postby AussieDodger » Sun Feb 15, 2009 12:09 am

When the Mets agreed to terms with Livan Hernandez early Saturday morning, many experts and MLBTR readers suggested that it meant Pedro Martinez would not be back with the club in '09.

Mets GM Omar Minaya basically confirmed that theory Saturday evening. The Associated Press, via The Newark Star-Ledger, gathered the quote:

"I think we are pretty much set and we're going to go forward with the guys that we have," Minaya said.

Livan over Pedro? Are they kee-razy? And what do they know that we don't?

Come to Oakland Pedro, Jason will take you out partying and everything will be kewl. :-L

They signed Livan to a minor league deal, to compete for the 5th spot in the rotation. If the Mets would have signed Pedro, they would have essentially hand him the 5th spot in the rotation, because Pedro is not looking for anything else at this point in his career and clearly the Mets were not ready to hand it to him. As much as I wouldn't have minded having Pedro back, I have no problem having a four way battle between Livan, Garcia, Niese and Redding in ST.
