Ibanez or Atkins - Who to keep

Postby pizzaboy76 » Sat Feb 14, 2009 9:24 am

I can keep 3 players in a 16 team 5x5 roto league. We start all the traditional position, except that we start 4 OF's and have a U spot. Also we start 9 P.

I am keeping Holliday, which costs we a 9th round pick and Fuentes which costs me a 20th round pick. My final spot is undecided, so who should I keep?

Ibanez or Atkins - Either would cost me an 8th round pick

I would lean towards Atkins, both should put up similar numbers but Akins qualifies at 2 positions 1b/3b.

Atkins, he's a big bargain there in a 16 teamer.

Atkins for sure. 3B is thin. Plenty of OF's out there like ibanez.

One more vote for Atkins, just to try to make it look like a landslide.

Wow, surprised to see everyone leaning towards Atkins. I was actually leaning the other way due to Atkins 3 years of declining numbers and losing Holliday, while Ibanez moves from spacious Seattle to the Philly which is a hitters park.

Ibanez is just such an old guy, really. He might do better in 2009, but in a keeper circumstance in which you consider him a candidate to be your third best keeper, I'd be looking for something younger. The depth of the league only magnifies the benefits of Atkins being able to cover 1b or 3b: it gives you some flexibility in the draft, and likely, you'll play him at 3b, as it's fairly shallow.

There's some chance Atkins is a top 5-6 guy at 3B, and even if Ibanez's raw numbers might be better, I'd rather be trolling for OF when you already have Holliday.

Is there someone else you could keep at the cost of a higher round pick? Fuentes at 20--that's a bargain, I understand. Either of these two hitters at 8 isn't bad, but are you sure there isn't something better?

Who else do you have?

I agree with your thoughts, especially considering positions. Because of that flexibility, I might just keep Atkins.

Others I could keep - O. Perez in the 19th, Dempster in the 17th, or Howard in the 1st (12th pick of 16).
