Blockbuster trade for 5x5 Keeper, need advice in 24 hours!

Postby RevToby » Fri Feb 13, 2009 9:37 pm

I'm in the second year of a standard 5x5 five year keeper league. 14 teams, 27 man rosters with 2 minor league spots. 12 keepers per team, mine currently look like this:

Bengie Molina
Jason Giambi
Miguel Cabrera
Jimmy Rollins
JJ Hardy
Adam Dunn
Torii Hunter
Magglio Ordonez
Bobby Jenks
John Lackey
Mariano Rivera
Ervin Santana

I have the following offers on the table:

Carlos Quentin and Jacoby Ellsbury for Jimmy Rollins and John Lackey

OR

Carlos Quentin and Jacoby Ellsbury for Jimmy Rollins and Mariano Rivera

Some notes:

- Being a keeper league, I’d be trading guys who are older and probably past their prime for younger guys with higher ceilings.

- That being said, competing THIS year has to be a top priority, so the trade has to work well on that level. If the trade in terms of this year is a wash, it’s obviously worth doing since I get better long term value.

- Should I be concerned about Quentin’s health (shoulder)? I’m a little worried I may be buying too high on him.

- Part of the reason I’m exploring this trade is that with Dunn and Giambi, I need high average guys who can steal some bags to balance the team out. I figure it’s easiest to fill this role at 2B/MI, so why not move one of my Shortstops for better value? Otherwise I’ll be drafting speed/average guys in the OF, I’d rather have those guys at MI where they’re easier to get.

Interested to hear your thoughts, this is obviously a huge trade for a keeper league and I want to make sure I get it right.

I like either deal. As for a preference on who to hold onto, I'd probably hold onto Lackey. Rivera even if he's up there in age is still very rock-solid (only gave up 5 walks last year).

As for Quentin, the injury is a right wrist, not a shoulder. The right wrist is a concern, but I think it would've been a bigger concern if it was the left wrist as a right-handed batter and apparently, he should be fine heading into 2009. His peripherals are quite good to support a 30-35 HR campaign with the upshot for a bit more. Ellsbury in a keeper is the clincher, I think as to why you want either deal.
