What would you have done if you where GM?

Postby CadensDad » Fri Feb 13, 2009 3:09 pm

This is a old thread I am going back to because I enjoyed reading what others thought should have happen to thier fav teams. Now let's not be too drmatic, we can't all trade for A-rod/Pujols/Utley and Han-Ram. but lets just see.

(I will post my thoughts on the Braves here shortly)

Ok as a Braves fan there is quite a few moves I would have made.

Braves had apex $40mil in money to spend

1st. Resign Smoltz, paid him the 5mil with 4-5 more in incentives. He will provide veteran leadership, and bring people to the stadium

Down to 35 Mil

2nd Traded for Peavy, move Escobar, Flowers, and Medlen

Down to 27 Mil

3rd signed Furcal, 3 years 30mil

Down to 17 mil

4th Signed Kawakami

Down to 10 mil

5th Sign Abreu to 6 mil 1 year deal

Down to 4 mil

Line up
SS-furcal
2B- Johnson
3B- Jones
LF-Abreu
C-McCann
RF-Francouer
1B-Kotchman
CF-Anderson

Rotation
Peavy
Kawakami
Smoltz
Jurrjens
Morton/Reyes

Closer- Gonzalez
Soriano
Moylan
Acosta
Logan
Boone
Bennett
Carlye

We still have 4Mil left to play with maybe sign a Glavine, or add another arm for the bullpen. But these moves would have made the Braves serious contenders. Also set us up for 2010 with a rotation of Jurrjens,Hanson,Hudson,Peavy, Kawakami. But oh well one can only dream?

How can you say sign Furcal to 3/30 mil deal? They clearly tried, and he decided he wanted to play in LA instead. That simply isn't a viable move, as we saw just a few weeks ago...

The Twins could have traded for DeRosa. That would have at least given them a capable stopgap at 3B.

I am relatively pleased with what the Mets have done this year. They turned a weakness into a strength by addressing the bullpen woes of the past few years. I believe Perez/Pelfrey/Maine all take a moderate step forward this year with Pelfrey ending the season as a solid #2. I am frustrated by Abreu signing for 1/5. I think Abreu in left moves Murphy to 2B addresses 2 problems. You move or release Castillo knowing you're better without him than with him.

1.Reyes
2.Beltran
3.Wright
4.Delgado
5.Abreu
6.Church
7.Murphy
8.Schneider
9.Pitcher

I'm relatively please as well, however, I'm in the camp of people that think signing Manny would have made all the difference in the world.

1. Reyes
2. Beltran
3. Wright
4. Manny
5. Delgado
6. Church
7. Schneider
8. Castillo
9. Pitcher

That lineup would have been amazing...

Pretty simple for me.

Keep DeRosa.
Keep Wood
Sign Bradley.
Trade for Peavy.
Trade for Roberts.

Is that too much to ask for? O:-)

dont get me wrong, I'd STILL do backflips if he ended up a Met!! I just think that there was EXTREME value with Abreu at $5M and as a "GM" I'm looking for value!!

Agreed...I would have signed Abreu in a hear beat, especially for 5 million. The only downsides are the fact that his defense is lackluster and he is a lefty. Having arguably the best right handed bat in his generation in the middle of that lineup would have done wonders. But yes, give me Abreu for 5 million 100 times out of 100 instead of the Murphy/Tatis platoon in LF.

If I'm Mark Shapiro, I sign a SP not named Pavano.

Then, I pray every night for Travis Hafner's shoulder before I go to bed.

Finally, I apologize to my fanbase for letting CC get away. I'm gonna miss that fat boy.
