5x5 Keeper help - WHIR

Postby mjhdrew » Fri Feb 13, 2009 11:50 am

Standard 5x5, 7 keepers, no loss of round for retaining the keeper.

Positions:

C/1B/2B/3B/SS/2B or SS/1B or 3B/5 OF/U
5 SP/3 RP/1 Flex P

I'm thinking the following:

R Howard 1B
R Cano 2B
D Wright 3B
I Suzuki OF

-------------

R Halladay - SP
D Matsuzaka - SP
J Papelbon - SP [EDIT: RP!]

Which means losing these guys (among others):

S Drew SS
T Hunter OF
E Bedard - SP
C Carpenter - SP

Ideally I would keep one fewer SP. Should I drop Dice-K for Stephen Drew or Hunter? I'm guessing Drew due to position scarcity, but that is mitigated by starting 5 OF.

Obviously people have different views on keeping RPs. I quite like retaining Paps here simply as he has such high value compared to the guys I am likely to drop. What do you think?

Bedard and Carpenter are obviously massive risks, but I'm interested in how people think they'll go this year.

Any other thoughts and ideas are very much welcomed.

Thanks.

try to deal one of your pitchers. dice-k slightly overrated good pitcher imo but in 5x5 he can hurt you a bit. drew is a multi cat beast at a thin position. i'd easily drop dice k for drew and feel happy about it.

When faced with a decision of Hitter or Pitcher. I consistently draft hitters over pitchers as they tend to be more consistent from year to year. Especially in the middle and later rounds, where SP that come from nowhere are always available on the WW. I would keep Drew and put Dice K back.

I like your thought on keeping Papelbon.

Given that I'll likely only retain one of them, and taking into account position scarcity versus starting 5 OF, should I move Drew and Dice-K as a package for someone like Rios?

I'm a little concerned with losing BA value (especially since I own Howard), hence wanting to retain Cano as I think he may a better year, like his 2008 second half. Let me know if you think that's garbage as I wouldn't mind losing him since he's a Yankee!

If I could trade Howard and Cano for MCab should I pull the trigger?

Thanks all.

i'd definitely pull the trigger on either of those trades, but i kinda doubt they'd get accepted. you are on the right track though, trying to do a 2 for 1 to make your keepers better, you just might have to settle for less than you would like.

I would pull the trigger on either of those deals as well. And I would keep Drew for sure. I'd rather have Dice-K than Cano, so I'd drop Cano.
