Keeper Trades. Which one if any?

Postby Brablc1 » Fri Feb 13, 2009 10:11 am

Hi all,

I have a 10 team head to head 5 x 5 keeper league with friends and its closing in on us announcing our 3 keepers. Right now I have Braun, Beltran and Markakis as keepers, however there are some trades on the board for me and I was wondering what your opinions were on them.

A) I was offered Braun and Beltran for D. Wright. (Granderson or A. Gonzalez probably would be my next in line keepers)
B) I was offered Utley for a 9th round pick in this year's draft (keepers are taken in the first three rounds)
C) I was offered Holliday and a 12th for Braun.
D) I was offered Fielder for Beltran.

I was considering the first two trades possibly in tandem (I could see the 9th round pick being a mid tier pitcher like Gallardo.) The last trade is interesting but I'm having a hard time pegging what Holliday will do this year (I'm not even sure he'll have better numbers than Markakis). I think Fielder will come back this year so I'm leaning towards this if Deal A and B fall through.

So should I take:
Deal A and keep Granderson as my third?
Do Deal A and B?
Do Deal C?
Do Deal D?
Do Nothing

Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

You are in a mildly tough spot with all three potential keepers being OF, so I think that making a move is probably a good thing. The bad thing is that all of the deals, with the exception of the Utley deal, are bad propositions for you from a pure value standpoint. I can see making them, based on your needs, but I would not be thrilled about it.

If I were you, I would do the deal for Utley, and go with the keeper list of Utley, Braun, Beltran. All three guys are 1st or 2nd round picks, and warrant being kept in a 30 keeper league. Markakis, while an excellent player, is a borderline top-30 player at this point. I like that keeper list slightly more than Wright, Utley, Markakis, although it is close, and I could understand if you wanted to do both A and B.

Take Utley asap for that 9th Round pick. He's a 1-2 round pick in most mock's I've seen and been part of (even with his hip). Then Trade Beltran for Fielder or try and deal Markakis, Making your 3 keepers:
Braun, Utley, Fielder/Beltran

Keep Wright or accept the trade.
Do the Utley trade.

Keep
Utley, Wright (even though value wise this might not make sense, but):

Go into the draft with Adrian Gonzalez, Chase Utley and David Wright.
Use your first four picks for the best available SS (say Furcal or Drew) and stud OFs.
The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!
