Most closers throw their "one pitch" about 80% of the time. Until 2002, Mariano threw his fastball 95% of the time. Then he developed the cutter, and now he throws the cutter about 80% of the time. I think if someone throws a pitch 80% of the time, that's a "one pitch" guy.

Motte's fastball isn't close to Mariano's. He may have 2-3 mph on him but Motte's fastball has zero movement and his control isn't as good.

So, I think his point is that it isn't him being a one pitch pitcher that is the problem, it is that his one pitch isn't good enough.

I think he threw it 93% of the time, 50% of the time, during night games...
