Most closers throw their "one pitch" about 80% of the time.

Until 2002, Mariano threw his fastball 95% of the time. Then he developed the cutter, and now he throws the cutter about 80% of the time.

I think if someone throws a pitch 80% of the time, that's a "one pitch" guy.

motte really should've gotten jack wilson with 2 outs and 0-2 count on him. the 0-2 pitch was supposed to be a waste pitch up high but he didn't get it up there and got hit.

Motte's fastball isn't close to Mariano's. He may have 2-3 mph on him but Motte's fastball has zero movement and his control isn't as good.

So, I think his point is that it isn't him being a one pitch pitcher that is the problem, it is that his one pitch isn't good enough.

Motte's fastball is pretty good and he has good control with it. The problem is that it doesn't have much movement and he has no reliable 2nd pitch. Hitters are going to sit on the fastball.
