Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Sunday that he's picked Kevin Gregg over Carlos Marmol as his team's closer.
Obviously, we overestimated Piniella in thinking that March wouldn't make the difference. Marmol has been the far more effective pitcher than Gregg two years running, and while Gregg does have the experience, he also blew nine saves in 38 chances last season. Marmol has only been charged with three blown saves while collecting eight saves and 46 holds the last two years. He's clearly the future for the Cubs. To put that on hold for a mediocrity like Gregg is just a bizarre decision.
It looks like rotoworld is bitter they were wrong. Many sites and newspapers were predicting a 60% chance that Gregg would be the closer. It's hardly a "bizarre" decision.

Kinda surprised by the "For Good" part. It makes sense this year in that the Mariners need a closer. But what happens with Josh Fields now? Just seems in the long run that Morrow is worth more starting.

Morrow says he's going to close.
Too bad he isn't the manager. That's a bullpen I'd just stay away from for now.

I'd stay away from people other than Morrow, but he could actually be a decent option.
On Gregg... I'm excited, I think he'll turn out to be a cheap option who (barring injury) should do enough to hold down the job all year...
I too was surprised by the rotoworld commentary, I think they were one of the sites describing Marmol as a 'top' closer option, ignoring the fact that he didn't have the job yet.

That was my 1st thought too, maybe morrow got pissed at not starting and said something rash but reading the blog post above it seems like he and the mariners are decided upon him closing this year

Pretty surprising news. Any thoughts on how he'll perform as a closer? I know he was lights out last year.

I don't think he'd be any worse than last year as long as that forearm injury doesn't linger

My prediction for Morrow.
