The Padres managed just four hits against the Cubs. Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg, both of whom are competing for the Cubs closer job, followed Atkins. Marmol pitched two perfect innings. Gregg worked 1 1-3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out three. Piniella said he'll make a decision on the closer's job by the middle of next week.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch is quoting the pitching coach for the Cards, Dave Duncan, as saying that Motte is the front runner for the job. He only mentions Motte and Perez and doesn't mention Franklin.
Perez encounters a speed bump at the same time many within camp project Jason Motte as the front-runner to open the season in the closer role.
Duncan confirmed Motte's standing Wednesday, saying, "Anyone who's been following what's been going on would notice that among those receiving consideration (to close), Motte has been the most impressive. There's a ways to go in camp. But that's where it stands for me."
The article is a pretty good overview of Perez's condition and the contest for the closer role.
News on the Brewer Closer backup situation. Considering the spring that Villanueva has had, I can't say I blame the brewers for looking at McClung
If closer Trevor Hoffman doesn't recover from his oblique strain -- a distinct possibility at this stage -- McClung also is a candidate to close games, according to Macha.
In my fridge: Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS), Central Waters Peruvian Morning, Bell's Batch 10,000, Dale's Pale Ale, Capital Brewery Amber, New Glarus Moon Man, and Guinness.

March 21, 2009 - 7:45 p.m. Jason Motte pitched a perfect ninth Saturday for his fourth save of the spring. Fantasy spin: Motte protected a one-run lead in a 12-11 game. It looks like the Cardinals are auditioning him for the closer's role by using him at the end of games, and he hasn't had a misstep yet. He has a 13/1 K/BB ratio to go along with his 1.08 ERA in 8 1/3 innings.
