Just take a quick look at the scoring and its pretty obvious.
The pitcher was struggling, but Tor was still up by a few runs, so Downs came in to preserve the lead...then gave it up. If he had finished the inning without giving up so many runs, he would have stayed in the game for the 5-out save.
Can't we all start doing this before posting simple questions?
I think it makes sense to hang on to Isringhausen until we hear from Maddon -- before Izzy's bad outing, it really sounded like Maddon wanted him to take the closer role down the line, even if he wasn't ready right away.

Downs gave up no runs.
correct: Downs gave up no earned runs - which is what I saw from the scoring, but after further, deeper investigation, I see that he must've given up runs earned to the previous pitcher.... very simple... sorry for asking.

oh, and by the way, your explanation for going to Downs only 1 out after the SP exiting, 5 outs to go, with Frasor and Ryan still in the 'pen, neither of whom worked the night previous... makes no sense either.

Yeah, today's outing was promising. 2 IP, 1 hit, 1 BB...but according to Yahoo's play by play, the first two batters he faced hit him hard (flyout to deep right and a double to deep left) before he settled down. His last outing was a very high pressure situation and the Indians had MAD momentum, it's not fair to relieve him of the closer's role because of that.
Right now I think it's Wheeler - Izzy - Howell - Nelson, and with Percival having a 60% chance of coming back. If he does come back he probably won't be given a shot at closer for 1-2 weeks even if everyone else is sucking.
Rocinante2: you know Rocinante2: its easy to dismiss the orioles as a bad team ofanrex: go on Rocinante2: i'm done Rocinante2: lmao

In his last outing he also had to get warmed up in about 1.5 minutes. He wasn't even thinking of coming in the game, but after Balfour gave up a bomb they started warming him up. Balfour walked the next guy on 4 pitches and they brough Izzy in. Combine that with the fact that he was getting squeezed, and it made for a bad inning. I think Wheeler will get some opps in the near future, but I still think Izzy will get opps and eventually be the guy Maddon wants to go to.
Capps (elbow) could return to the Pirates bullpen as early as Friday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Recommendation: Capps completed a 20-minute light tossing session Thursday morning and reported only minor lingering stiffness in his right elbow. "It was a little stiff today, but there's been no issue with the elbow or the bone that was bruised before," Capps said. "They've told me to go on feel, and it feels good enough to go." The reliever will go through a full bullpen session on Friday. If that goes well, then he'll likely be available later that night. (Rotowire.com)
