2009 Closers Thread (No Game Commentary Please)

Bailey with the sv for Oak tonight..He and Zeigler had not pitched in a couple days

The question is why Bailey got the chance to close.

I thought it was clear Ziegler wasn't the closer when he was brought in during the 7th of a close game which Oakland was winning last week. Russ Springer blew up in the 8th, but it was clear they were lining up Bailey for the 9th to close. He ended up having to pitch two innings and allowing one run while K'ing 4. I thought it's been clear Bailey will be closing most/all the games (unless he implodes) as of last week. I even posted about it in this thread, but I guess sometimes things get lost in here.

yeah ziegler warming up in the 6th right now in a 1-1 game. i think its pretty clear hes lost the job. So I guess Bailey is the man now or is he going to be sharing with wertz?

Why exactly did Ziegler lose his job? He has 5 saves with only 1 blown one on the year. He got sick, had 3 iffy games (due to being sick I assume), and all of a sudden he's been pitching in non-save situations for a couple weeks.

Just take a quick look at the scoring and its pretty obvious.

The pitcher was struggling, but Tor was still up by a few runs, so Downs came in to preserve the lead...then gave it up. If he had finished the inning without giving up so many runs, he would have stayed in the game for the 5-out save.

don't forget that it was said ziegler still needed at least a week to fully recover from the flu. they might be taking it easy on him.

i think it is pretty clear (lets say 90%) that assuming there is no blowup or serious regression, bailey at least has the portion of the job devine was supposed to have coming into the year, with zeigler going back to the role the A's envisioned for him alongside devine. personally i think there is a decent chance bailey gets the job outright.

i would certainly rather have bailey at this point, but if i could somehow have zeigler as well, i'd feel a lot better, as it is likely zeigler will get some save opps, and of course it is possible he'll get the majority of them.
