I'd guess so. He pitched pretty well as the closer last year. I don't know who else would be in his way, not Perez. Betancourt was bad last year as the closer, so I'd roll with Jensen if I was to pick up somebody. That being said, I think Wood still has a pretty long leash.. tonight was just one terrible outing.

Boston in general has not shown a true 8th inning guy so far. And Saito has not had much action. Just curious.....

Personally, as a Sox fan, I would call Saito the "backup closer", but that doesn't mean he's the guy for holds.
Basically, I think Francona likes Saito's closing experience in the 9th, so he's the second guy there. But he doesn't believe that Saito's the best pitcher in his pen, therefore he goes to MDC/Okajima/Ramirez for holds in the 7th and 8th innings.

Rotoworld on Downs/Ryan situation:

Some might feel that Ryan will eventually get the closer gig back because he makes $10 mil per year -- hey, baseball is a business; stranger things have happened – but don't hold your breath, Ryan owners: Downs has the job until further notice. 5 saves, 22/2 K/BB rate, 1.86 ERA. Nasty.

Of course Downs won't lose the job if he continues pitching lights out and BJ sucks as expected. But because of BJ's contract, two things happen: 1) Downs has a shorter leash than, let's say, Brad Lidge, who has 8.00+/1.80+ ratios and is still the main closer, and 2) if they perform equally well, Ryan is more likely to steal the job back.

For the last time. Last time.

Nobody here thinks BJ SHOULD get his job back or necessarily WILL get his job back.
(Say that last part to yourself again)
However your comments about it being 100% Downs job for the year is too bold a statement, and that's all people were saying. I repeat, that's all people were saying.

Also quoting a Rotoworld blurb as the gospel.... :-°

Another thing to consider about Ryan is that being the closer that only goes out for save ops is a lot easier on your body than being the elite setup guy that needs to get warm in a hurry in the 7th/8th. Think of how the Cubs used Wood/Marmol last year. IF Ryan can throw like he did last year, the Jays would have a better chance of him staying healthy and effective if he was the closer and they moved Downs back to the important setup role.
Here's the pitch on the way, a swing and a belt! Left field! Way back! BLUE JAYS WIN!

I think we can all just agree that BJ Ryan sucks right now, and Downs is doing great....and for now, that's that. Don't be surprised if a change occurs, don't be surprised if one doesn't....it's the Blue Jays.

I think moving on is the best think to do.
