2009 Closers Thread (No Game Commentary Please)

Beimel is looking pretty bad and looks like he is about to blow the 4 run lead all with 2 outs. They have Wells warming up in the pen to probably take over if he allows another hit/walk. Looks like Hanrahan will get the save tonight if there is a save opp.



EDIT- It wasn't pretty but Beilmel got out of the inning. We will see who the Nats bring in if they don't get anymore runs.

Now only up by 2, runners on 1st and 3rd (save situation??), and Hanrahan is warming up..

EDIT: OK, Wells was able to get out of it after giving up 2 runs. For what its worth, they had Wells warming up in the 9th when Beimel was in trouble (and still a save situation before the Nats scored a run in top of 9th), and Hanrahan warming in the 9th when Wells was in trouble. If anything, looks like Beimel is not in the mix for saves in the future..

yes definitely. and apparently he's been re-inserted into the "committee"

When Hanrahan was originally lowered in the bullpen depth chart, veterans Julián Tavárez and Kip Wells earned (or received by default) responsibility for late, close games. Neither has done much to keep that role -- something Acta emphasized when explaining why Hanrahan will now be reinserted into the closer-by-committee group.

Hanrahan "has pitched well enough for us the last three outings where we think he's fine," Acta said. "Plus, the guys that took over for him, it's not like they have been lights-out."

And I'll say it one last time, I never said it wasn't Downs, just that his reasons for calling it Downs were weak (including incorrect stats).

LOL, I missed this the other day. Yeah, Cito's familiarity with Scott Downs didn't play a factor at all in being the #1 option to close.

It seems to me that Jim Johnson would be the next in line and not Ray.

Is there any concern that Soria is not physically ok?

He struggled yesterday & IMO didnt quite look right.
