Bedard for Wieters?, WHIR

Postby BigDunn » Thu Feb 12, 2009 3:38 pm

Keeper League, keep 17 players, draft the final 6 rounds. Normal 5x5 roto league, daily transactions. Max innings: 1250.

Here's my team:
Keepers:
C J.Mauer, 1B A.Pujols, 2B B.Roberts, 3B M.Cabrera, SS M.Young, LF D.Young, CF J.Bruce, RF A.Rios, UT P.Fielder, BN C.Rasmus
SP: J.Peavy, R.Halladay, D.Haren, J.Beckett, M.Cain, E.Bedard, C.Buchholz
Non-Keeper:
CF M.Bourn
RP: M.Lindstrom, F.Francisco, T.Hoffman, C.Qualls, F.Rodney, J.Rauch, B.Wagner

I've been offered the #1 overall pick in exchange for Bedard. I wasn't planning on trading Bedard because I think he'll bounce back and his value is really low right now (it was only a year ago that he was arguably considered a top 5 SP). But this does seem like a decent price, if I make this trade I would be able to add another keeper (one of my closers, probably Lindstrom). With the #1 pick, I most likely would select Wieters as he should offer more value than any other players dropped as someone's 18th best player. Now I don't really need Wieters, but I could let him develop for a year and look to trade him or Mauer in a year. What do you think, is Wieters and Lindstrom for Bedard a good trade for me? Thanks.

in a keeper league i would make this trade for sure. the fact that you get to keep an extra keeper is just a bonus.

No question. Having the ability to sit Wieters until he becomes the best hitting catcher in baseball is a huge luxury, and then when he hits his stride, moving him or Mauer will bring you an unbelievable reward. Wieters is worth Bedard in my mind, even without the perk of the added keeper spot (Lindstrom).

Same here, no question about this for me... Not only do you get Weiters, but this deal essentially gives you an extra keeper of sorts.

If you really believe in Bedard, I understand your hesitation, but I really don't; get some value while you still can.

I'm not a huge Bedard fan, so this one is easy for me. Even though Wieters hasn't played a game yet, I'd still do the trade. You have Mauer in there to hold you over for Wieters arrival and then you have a nice piece of trade bait in either Mauer or Wieters.

I'd make this trade too. Bedard's injuries scare me too much. Wieters for Bedard is a steal IMO.

Thanks guys, I've been a big Bedard fan (have him on all my keeper teams since he came up to the majors), so that was probably my biggest issue, that mental hurdle. Right now I have Hoffman and Bedard for the #1 pick on the table and he has said he thinks the deal is fair and just needs to mull it over a bit and decide if the trade makes sense for his team. Hopefully he decides yes!

I think this is a good deal for you.

I would also consider keeping Rodney over Lindstrom if Fernando can win the closers job out of ST. But replacing Hoffman with Lindstrom/Rodney makes this trade WELL worth it for you!
