Crazy draft strategy??? Hear me out

Postby FBBVirgin » Tue Feb 10, 2009 3:18 pm

I am in a 10 team keeper league. I finished runner up last year, so I have the 9th and 12th picks in this years draft. The typical talent that is available at the end of the first round in a re-draft league is not going to be there. I am thinking about going Johan Santana with 9 and CC Sabathia at 12. With pitching, we have CGs, Wins, ERA, Ks and WHIP as our categories.

MY KEEPERS
BJ Upton
Josh Hamilton
Nate McLouth
Ervin Santana

POSSIBLE PLAYERS AVAILABLE AT 9 AND 12
Ichiro, Manny, Adrian Gonzales...people of that tier.

I know the guys I play with, and both pitchers will be available at those positions. Should I go pitcher heavy and take chances on guys like Chris Davis in the middle of the draft?

THANKS

Maybe I am misunderstanding but this is a keeper league and Santana and CC are not being kept?

Either way your stratergy is not that crazy and I have seen teams do it. In a league last year one of the managers had the swing pick and went Santana and Peavy, so its not a crazy stratergy.

My advice though with your settings is to maybe look at Halladay instead. I hate CG's as a category, but if you play with it Halladay's value is ridiculous. Over the last 3 years Halladay has 20 CG while CC has 14 and Santana only 5.

Your strategy is certainly not crazy, but I would not recommend it unless all 3 of those bats you mentioned are off the board. I would gladly take one of them and then one of those 2 SPs if they are available. I think it'd be crazy to let Manny or Gonzo pass, especially since you only have one guy who's a lock to hit over 25 HR in your keepers (Hamilton)...

Our league is a weird keeper set-up. Basically, you can keep a guy for up to 3 years, but you need to give up 2 rounds before he was drafted the year before. I.E. you draft Joe Baseball in the 10th round this year, next year you get him in the 8th, the year after you get him in the 6th, etc... So, the marquis players cannot be kept (Arod being drafted 1st round, there isn;'t a round two before the first).

Hope that clarifies it.

I might employ this strategy. I feel confident in my abilty to nab players in later rounds and in FA that will make up for not getting a Manny or a GOnzo. I would dominate Wins, Ks, ERAs with Johan, CC and Ervin as my main 3 (and then target the Yovani Gallardos of the world after round 10).

I am probably just using this thread to talk myself into it!
