Dynasty League: Alvarez vs Smoak

Postby HoopsCentral » Tue Feb 10, 2009 1:01 pm

I'm on the clock in the minors draft of a first year dynasty (standard 5x5). I'd really like to select Alvarez because I believe that he is the better hitter and ultimately has the higher potential. What's holding me back though is the Pirates' shoddy track record and just the general situation of the franchise. Smoak just seems like he is in a much better spot for success, and is perhaps a better bet to fulfill his potential than Alvarez is. I come to you guys for help. Who is the better in a dynasty league?

I'm ok at 1B and 3B. Just looking to acquire the best player available.

I am going to say Smoak. I like Alvarez as well as Smoak in my Dynasty league and I think I am more confident in Smoak than I am with Pedro. Smoak has the plate discipline and the park to be a stud 1B and I think Alvarez is going to take some time to get to the majors, call it a hunch but that is the feeling I get.

I agree with most, Smoak wins cause he is pretty much equal and I'd much rather have hitter in the Rangers line up.

I know I shouldn't project a player solely on his organization, but I don't want Alavarez simply because he is a Pirate. I hope for his sake that I am wrong.

Alvarez might have the higher upside, but I prefer Smoak. He's safer imo and he's in a better park in a lineup that is going to score runs.

Alvarez vs. Smoak = likely mediocre Pittsburgh offense in the 4 best pitcher's park vs. Probably better Texas offense in the best hitters park in baseball.

Since the players are relatively close, I'd go with Texas over Pittsburgh (although obviously trades are a possibility)
