Suspicions that the worst wildfires ever to strike Australia were deliberately set led police to declare crime scenes Monday in towns incinerated by blazes
Officials believe arson may be behind at least some of the more than 400 fires that tore a destructive path across a vast swath of southern Victoria state over the weekend.
Yeah they should (if caught and convicted) take them to a large sports arena and burn them at the stake 15th century style. They could sell tickets to it with the proceeds going to victims of the blaze
The one near me was allegedly caused by a cigarette butt.

i've decided to start a company that builds houses out of chimneys. i've seen enough pictures of burned down houses where the chimney stands alone to realize how great of an idea this is, it's really somewhat shocking that nobody has thought of it before. if anyone wants in on the ground floor of a company sure to make billions, i could use some capital to get started.

I saw a program on Discovery Channel or something about this a couple years ago. One of those "perfect storm" shows where they say that someday all of the conditions will come together to create these huge problems. The others they talked about were huge earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest, super tornadoes in Texas, power outage in the North East, and I think typhoons in Japan or something. Anyway, sounds like the conditions all came together in Australia: years of drought, extreme heat wave, crazies starting fires, etc. I don't understand how so many people are dying, though. Are people just not evacuating when told? We have bad fires just about every year in the American West, and it's rare for more than a handful of people to be killed.
