Trade Advice / Rounding Out Keeper List

Postby Verminator » Sun Feb 08, 2009 12:17 am

I am in a keeper league where we can keep 8 players + 1 rookie (in 2009 according to MLB rules). This league allows off season trades and trades for the next year's draft picks. I had a poor 2008 so I made several trades to get a lot of 2009 draft picks. I am looking for an 8th veteran keeper to round out my keeper roster for 2009.

I believe I have 8 sure fire keepers in Sizemore, Fielder, Bay, Markakis, Bruce, Tulowitzki, Liriano, and Price (R).

I really don't want to keep anyone else on my roster... including Verlander, CR Young, Aviles, Jimenez, Pierre, etc.

I have an accepted but not yet finalized offer for Jayson Werth for a throwaway pick. I am intrigued by Werth's 20/20 potential and a full time role in 2009 likely batting 5th in the Phillies order. I am just a little concerned about his health record and having a 5th OF as a keeper.

Although the deal is agreed to, the guy I am talking to is interested in trading a bigger player to me for more picks. Here is who he has available:

V Martinez
B Roberts
C Davis
K Youkilis
D Ortiz

How would you recommend I proceed in selecting an 8th veteran keeper?

a) Keep one of the guys on my current roster
b) Make the Werth deal
c) Try to acquire one of the other guys on this guy's roster, likely having to give up additional picks to get them

Thanks... and feel free to post a link to your question and I'll offer my advice as well!
When it comes to exaggerating, I always give 110%.

A lot depends on the picks you would have to give up. Roberts, Davis or Werth would be nice but only if the price is right. And since you have to keep an 8th player than I would make a deal as long as it doesn't undo everything you did last year.

I'd make a deal for Roberts, Youk, Davis or Ortiz if the price is right. Grab a sure thing. Otherwise, you're also gambling on the fact that someone you think will be available when you pick will indeed be there. Grab the sure thing.
