We raised our keeper total to 8 from 6, so I can add two players from my team (marked below). However I can also replace 1 or 2 of my original keepers with a replacement from the same list.
Current Keepers: Grady Sizemore (OF) Jose Reyes (SS) BJ Upton (OF) Tim Lincecum (SP) Hunter Pence (OF) Russell Martin (C, 3B) _____? _____?
Possible Additions/Replacements: Carlos Quentin (OF) Joakim Soria (CL) David Price (SP) Justin Duchscherer (SP) Rich Harden (SP) Chad Billingsley (SP) Alex Gordon (1B/3B)
Quentin is a given for me and due to my depth in the OF I'd probably drop Pence for Quentin, which would still give me two keepers to add. The real only options I'd consider are Price, Soria, Billingsley, and Gordon (or is Pence worthy of a spot amongst those names considering I were to drop him?) Any thoughts?
This is what I would do. I don't think your going to have a shot at Price again after this year, so you may have to bit the bullet and keep him now. Quentin and Billingsley are no brainers. I wouldn't even consider Duchsherer, Harden, or Gordon. Soria is a solid closer, and he is worth a keeper spot. With that said, I would hang on to Price for the upside.
Thanks for all the responses...so it looks like the question is really turning into Hunter Pence vs. David Price. I could definitely see Pence building on 2008 but I'd fill all my OF spots and a UTIL spot as well - which obviously isn't a big deal but it's not exactly preferable. Price could go through some growing pains too. Either way I still could end up with one of these guys in the draft.
Do any of you see Price taking a similar path to Lincecum? I snagged him in the first year of the draft and held on to him and obviously that turned out really well. I had more time to follow guys like Lincecum back then but didn't follow Price quite as much. I understand it's still early and he has the talent but Lincecum was a slam dunk for me back then.
Not many guys turn into Lincecum. Price probably has as good as chance as any young arm though. But i can't see really throwing away Pence to chance it.

Tough call with Pence and Price but I'd lean towards Pence because I believe he is ready to bust out. Price probably won't hit top value for at least another season as TB limits innings and probably won't need to lean heavily on him with that solid staff. If he's another Lincecum, we probably won't find out next season... Before deciding, I'd dangle those 2 out there to see if someone is willing to go 2 for 1 and try to upgrade that final slot with another top ace or bat.
I also like Quentin and Billingsley. As far as dropping Pence for Price thats tough, I would be more inclined to keep the bat, although I would live to have a crystal to foresee Prices future.
