After reading the 'Use the Rules' article on this very cafe's homepage I decided that I may not take a top C with one of my first picks. Instead I may wait and aim for Clement or Iannetta. What say you?
Its a 14 team head-to-head POINTS league where we start a ton of players, have daily lineup changes, and count pretty much anything in our points system. We keep 4 this year and 6 next year, then 8 and 10 the next years after that. Originally I was thinking having a top C such as Martin, Mauer or McCaan would really be an advantage in a 14 team league since there are very few good catchers and my team would be able to put up significantly more points from this spot than most other teams. This worked for me the first two years of our league as I finished 1st and 4th with Martin as my Catcher. Because of this my idea was to take one of Martin/Mauer/McCaan with my first (#66) or second pick (#75) this year and then possibly keep them next year since the next few years they will most certainly be top 100 picks and thus would be valuable as keepers, especially since I would be one of the only teams with a good C each year from here on out (Discounting Wieters, Iannetta, or someone else breaking out). Considering we start a ton of other players, I am now wondering if this was really a big reason I have done well each year.
Anyhoo, here are my league positions...since we start so many players MY QUESTION is how much weight to really put on the C position? Again, what would you do considering my positions and the fact we can keep 6 players next year?? THANKS C 1B - Cabrera (keeper) 2B - Kinsler (keeper) SS - HRamirez (keeper) 3B OF - Hamilton (keeper) OF OF OF DH U U P - START 14
8 Bench players (no pitchers allowed), 2 minor leaguers, 4 DL spots
If you're leaning that way, in a keeper with 8 bench spots, I'd aim for Weiters just after the 3 M's go. Then you can get a 2nd catcher later to fill Weiters spot 'till he comes up to the majors, that's if he doesn't make it straight out of spring training.
I am of the opinion that you keep or go after the best available players. Position only comes into it if the next best guy at a position is far far inferior to the top available player at that position. A points league muddies that a bit as it depends on your scoring system.

Yeah, I like this idea actually. If he is what he is supposed to be than even if he doesnt breakout big this year, he should be a fine keeper for the next few years. Around what pick would you try for him? He's going on avg around 152 but I would guess he goes a bit earlier in a keeper. Problem is I don't really want to reach for him though and anything higher than 150 seems like reaching a bit even in a keeper no?
I wouldn't worry about C right away. OF/SP would be a more pressing need I figure. As you say, you start a lot of players, making the C spot a little less valuable than it alreadys is. I would rather get extra production with an upper echelon OF than C.
