Pujols Deal?

Postby The Bud Can » Fri Feb 06, 2009 12:06 am

Hey, fellas. This question surrounds a 12 team, 5x5 roto league. You can have anywhere from 0-7 keepers each year, plus all players in your minor league system. The team budget is $300. My 4 keepers, as it stands are...

Albert Pujols - $33
Felix Hernandez - $29
Curtis Granderson - $14
Shane Victorino - $11
Total - $87

I have been attacked with offers for Pujols all week long. Of the 12 teams in the league, 7 have contacted me so far. I have been able to dismiss most of them pretty easily, but this one is bothering me. I send Pujols and Victorino in exchange for Andre Ethier ($1), Jonathan Broxton ($5), James Loney ($4) and Chris Davis ($6). Now, the new keepers would be...

Felix Hernandez - $29
Curtis Granderson - $14
Chris Davis - $6
Jonathan Broxton - $5
James Loney - $4
Andre Ethier - $1
Total - $59

I also have a trade on the table that would net me Vladimir Guerrero ($29) for Joe Mauer ($17). I would be able to keep Vlad, too, for a new total of 7 players at $88.

So, the bottom line is, would you move Pujols and Victorino (and Mauer, who I'm not keeping anyway) for Vlad, Broxton, Davis, Loney and Ethier? Thanks, and if I can help you out in any way, I will.

The deal for Davis and Broxton gives you some super value, but Pujols for $33 is pretty super value itself, so I might stand pat here.

What's up with Felix for $29? X-I

When I went back and looked, Hernandez is $26, not $29. Not that it makes much of a difference.

But, yeah, the salaries on this team are pretty wacky. I jumped on board with a month to go last season, after the league kicked the original owner out due to inactivity. Other keeper possibilities on this team were Carlos Zambrano for $26, Francisco Rodriguez for $27, Vernon Wells for $27 and Joe Mauer for $21(figured Felix was the most valuable of the bunch at that price). This team ended up 11th last year. I'm in it for the long haul, though, so hoping to improve steadily. That's another reason I was thinking about the Davis/Broxton/Loney/Ethier deal. A title won't be there this year, but if I can add enough young parts, maybe in a year or two...?

I concur Pujols @ $33 is very good value and Felix @ $26 is awfully steep, yikes. Where is Mauer on your keeper list @ $17 he is also good value.

I would list the rest of your team.

I wouldn't make the trade, Pujols is a beast, even if those four players have solid value. I think you are making a mistake trading Mauer for Vlad; Vlad's on the downside of his career while Mauer is much younger. You will find few, if any, options better than him at C, not to mention $17 is excellent value for him. Felix at $26 seems very high; I would toss him back. If worst comes to worst, someone pays more than $26 for him. If so, more power to them. Your $26 can be better spent elsewhere.

I can see why you might be tempted with that offer, but at $33 Pujols is a bargain. As far as the Vlad trade, I would stay away from that. Mauer is a solid value at $17, and in my opinion Vlad is way overpriced at $29.

Keep Pujols. He is a once in a lifetime kind of player and is worth more than the others combined.

I turned down both trades today, guys. Can't thank you guys enough for the help. I knew in my heart that it wasn't the right move to make, but needed someone else to back me up. Thanks again.
