Bruce/McCutcheon/Rollins for Pujols/Reyes in Auction League?

Postby kidsilk » Thu Feb 05, 2009 11:50 am

I just took over this team in a NL only Auction league with 12 teams, 23 man rosters, 8 keepers per year, 260 dollars to spend per team, 5x5 roto style
I have been offered Jose Reyes at $43 and Albert Pujols at $43 for my Jay Bruce-$5, Andrew McCutcheon-$5 and Jimmy Rollins-$35.

My keepers without making the deal are:

Rollins-$35
Fielder-$25
Soriano-$39
J.Sanchez-$2
Dempster-$1
Bruce-$5
Werth-$8
F. Cordero-$19

I am leaving out Atkins at $39 and Haren at $38 because I feel they are overpriced. So this is a total of $134. If I made this deal my keepers would be:

Pujols-$43
Reyes-$43
Fielder-$25
Soriano-$39
Sanchez-$2
Dempster-$1
Werth-$8
Cordero-$19

For a total of $180 so I would only have 80 dollars left to fill a roster of 15 more players. But, I would have two studs at their positions. I could drop Soriano from the keeper list and keep Maholm at $1 to save $38 bucks bringing my total to $142 which might be the best idea if I do this deal.

Anyway, what do you guys think about this? Remember it is NL only and Auction style. Thanks.

I have never played auction league or NL only at that. But i dont think id do the deal. Your giving up a lot of money to get 2 yes superstars but id be happy with keeping bruce and rollins at those prices. rollins and soriano an give you the speed you need that reyes would give, plus the power that they provide. Fielder soriano rollins werth bruce will give you the power that pujols has, just only thing that would be draw back is avg, but im sure you can find others to fill that. If it was me i wouldnt, you could buy some decent alternatives for that extra $46. But hey im just giving my opinion as i havent played this format before, thanks for all your help on my end

I see as with all keeper leagues, that after a few years inflation runs rampant. That being said, its hard to put the salaries in perspective, but in general I'd have to say the only bargain that's in this trade is Bruce at $5 - he could return close to $30 in '09, the rest are too over-valued to give you an answer.

i think that you would improve dramatically your team by accepting this trade..and i like the idea of throwing soriano back and keeping maholm leaving $142 for 15 players which will allow you to grab a stud SP and fill out a very nice hitting team (2 of the 4 best NL hitters plus fielder (HRs and RBIs)and werth (20-20)..IF your 09 fortunes should implode then you would have 2 great talents (reyes and pujols) to sell to the contenders for some fiiine 2010 talent and budget prices..do the deal, it adds chips to your side and flexibility to strategize

I would consider the deal. Soriano does sound a bit expensive as well. I would thrown him back

I would take it. You get a big upgrade from Rollins-Reyes for short money extra, I've never been a huge Rollins fan.

I realize you talked about throwing Soriano back and that has some merit esp. if you think you can repurchase him, but perhaps another idea is to throw back Cordero even though $19 for a closer ain't bad.

Wondering though who else you have for cheap that you could keep instead that isn't listed here.

Thanks for helping with mine!

Could always keep Davis for $1. He won't be a rock star but he's serviceable.

Definitely you need to make the trade. Pujols/Reyes are both bargains (not huge bargains, but bargains) at those prices in an NL-only. I like the idea of giving Soriano back also.

At the end of the day, you need production. I'd rather get $43 worth of production from a $43 Pujols than $15 of production from a $5 Bruce. I know you get more *value* from Bruce, but you win with totals, not values. If you can't translate those savings into more production it's not worth saving. Plus, in the re-auction, prices are going to be high for good players because teams with a lot of $$ left over are going to bid them up.

It depends on who else is available, but I would do this. Pujols and Reyes are usually top-tier players. Combined with Fielder and Soriano gives you 4 top of the line hitters. I would then go after some pitchers, because although Dempster and Sanchez are huge favorites of mine, you would probably like to solidify your staff a little more. Hope this helps.
