Please help with last 3 keeper spots...

Postby JHubRoyals » Tue Feb 03, 2009 6:47 pm

12 team Standard Roto league. We have 7 keepers and 5 prospects. Our keepers are due in 2 weeks, so I am hoping to trade a few of the leftovers off for draft picks.

Here are the guys that I am expecting to keep.
1. Ian Kinsler
2. Brandon Webb
3. Matt Kemp
4. Joe Nathan or Joakim Soria
5. ?
6. ?
7. ?

Ryan Zimmerman (probably will keep, I like his upside and position)
Shane Victorino (also high on my list because of his help across the board)
Adam Dunn
Hunter Pence
Russell Martin
Vernon Wells
Jhonny Peralta
Cliff Lee
Dice-K

Which 3 from that list would you keep? Would you change any of top 4?

Thank you for any help.

I'd keep both Nathan and Soria. The other two Zimmerman and Martin.

I don't think you should be keeping two closers if you only have 7 keepers. Pick Nathan or Soria...I would lean towards Nathan, he's a rock. I'd rank them as follows:

1. Kinsler (5-cat stud)
2. Webb (elite SP)
3. Martin (positional scarcity)
4. Kemp (5-cat contributor with upside left)
5. Nathan/Soria (pick one)
6. Victorino (speed demon with a little pop)
7. Dunn (that average kills me)
8. Dice-K (if not for walks/WHIP, would be a top 10 SP)
9. Peralta (last year's numbers are probably his peak, which isn't bad)
10. Zimmerman (not bad, but a little overrated IMO)
11. Pence (will probably put up numbers similar to Zimm at a much deeper pos.)
12. Lee (I think he'll be solid but nowhere near last year)
13. Wells (good all-around guy but nowhere near the upside of the others)

Though I just realized if you follow my rankings exactly, you would be keeping 3 OF's, so I would probably skip Victorino or Dunn and grab Dice-K, Peralta, or Zimm instead.

As much as it pains me to say it, you need Dunn's power more than Victorino's speed, so I'd swallow his average, let the Flyin' Hawaiian go, and take Dice-K.

Yeah, what TPony just posted is important. Kinsler has a great bat with some speed and Kemp will help with such stats likewise, but the only true super-pop guy you have is Adam Dunn. He's a consistent masher that knocks them in and, if your league doesn't count strikeouts, then the average is the only really downer. Gotta keep him.

The others are mostly positional. Go with Martin and Zimm since you like him so much. Might as well go with some gut feeling on your part.

You can't let Pence go in a keeper.

Thanks for the advice so far!

So I guess I've narrowed it down to...

3 spots for:
Hunter Pence
Ryan Zimmerman
Joakim Soria
Shane Victorino
Adam Dunn
Dice-K

As much as I love Soria with his FILTHY stuff, I don't see keeping 2 closers unless I can really justify it. I agree I need HR, but the question is the 40/100 worth the .250 and where is he gonna play? Do I need a 2nd starter? Pence/Victorino/Zimmerman...who has the most upside?

At least I narrowed a few off of the list haha.

any more thoughts?
