Middle relievers

Postby Robert1977 » Tue Feb 03, 2009 6:01 pm

Does anyone have an opinion on Steven Shell, from Washington? My league counts holds.

I've been offered Chris B. Young (Ariz.) at $5, Shell at $3, and Pinto at $3 for Josh Johnson at $3 and Lindstrom at $7. I'm wondering if this is a good deal for me. The only other good-value hitter I have is Hart at $5.

Thoughts?

Holds are hard to predict to begin with. But when I have to, I try to go for guys with established roles (set-up guys) who play for good teams. Shell doesn't fit that bill and I wouldn't pay more than $1 for him in any league.
He once hit a ball between my legs so hard that my center-fielder caught it on the fly backing up against the wall.

If Satch (Paige) and I were pitching on the same team, we would clinch the pennant by July fourth and go fishing until World Series time.

This is great... a Steven Shell scenario. I would agree with MikeeDee in that Shell is far from a sure thing in regards to his role. However, he pitched pretty well in Pittsburgh for a time. That said, Washington's bullpen is constantly in flux and depending on Shell to get consistent holds is risky at this time.

As much as you need Young to beef up your hitter situation, giving away a solid pitcher and possible closer for a hitter and a few suspect relievers might have you selling yourself short. Is there anyone other than Shell you could acquire? Perhaps there's a cheap bat that could prove useful...
