Dynasty league: Berkman for Lackey and Ellsbury

Postby smalls2598 » Tue Feb 03, 2009 1:04 pm

I have been offered John Lackey and Jacoby Ellsbury for Lance Berkman in my 10 team Dynasty League (keep 20 players)

If i make the trade, my team would look as follows
C- open, 1b Pujols, 2b Utley, 3b Wright, ss Drew
OF (we start 4) - Manny, CLee, Hart, ellsbury
UTL - open

We start 5 SP
SP - Beckett, Halladay, E.Santana, Danks, Garza, Jurjens, Kershaw, Lackey

Scoring categories:
Code: Select all
Singles   .5 points
Doubles   1 point
Triples   1.5 points
At Bats   -.25 points
Assists   .1 points
Walks   .5 points
Caught Stealing   -.5 points
Errors   -1 point
GIDP   -1 point
Hits   .5 points
Home Runs   2 points
Strikeouts   -.5 points
OF Assists   1 point
Runs   1 point
RBI    1 point
SB    .5 point

Balks   -1 point
Walks Issued   -.5 points
Blown Saves   -3.0 points
Complete Games   3.5 points
Earned Runs   -.5 points
Hits Allowed   -.5 points
HB - Hit Batsmen   -.5 points
HD - Holds   3 points
INN - Innings   1 point
Strikeouts    .5 points
Losses   -3.5 points
No-Hitters   10 points
Pick Offs   1 point
Quality Starts   5 points
Saves   5 points
Shutouts   3.5 points
Wins   5 points

Based off these stat categories, here is how each performed (3 year avg, 2008, 2009Proj):
Berkman: 302, 322, 291
Lackey: 273, 216, 318
Ellsbury: 121, 188, 199

While i'd lose a beast of an offensive player in Berkman, i'd be getting back one heck of a SP who would make my SP much deeper. I'd also be getting much needed OF help (I also have Denard Span, Nelson Cruz and Francouer, but don't plan on keeping them), who'll be the leadoff guy on a deadly Red Sox team. Also, Berkman is the eldest of the group (will be 33 this month) as opposed to the 30 year old Lackey and 25YO Ellsbury.

However, i don't really know if I'm sold on Ellsbury; sure he steals bases and may score some runs, but doesn't seem to do much else. I know Lackey missed time last year due to injury, but when he returned, he pitched well. Also, Berkman has an great first half, then cooled down significantly in the 2nd half.

What are your opinions on the trade? Should i accept?

You could use some speed and spare some power. Lackey is a very reliable pitcher and Berkman is getting up there in age and his second half was a bit worrisome. I'm not the biggest Berkman fan. I think you should accept the deal personally

I like the deal for you, but who are you keeping over Span and Cruz? Both have a ton of upside and could help you replace Manny when Manny's days are done.

Do Steals get no points? That would be tragic if you acquired Ellsbury. I like the deal as well as some of your guys are getting older. Lackey also helps bolster a mostly young staff.

Thanks for the replies so far.

To answer the questions brought up:

-Steals count as 0.5 points
-I'm not sure if i'll be keeping Span or Cruz, because i feel i can easily pick them up in the draft. However, my final keeper spot comes down to Span/Cruz/Bonderman/Francouer

Cool, if you go with the trade for Ellsbury, I would keep Cruz out of that bunch (actually I would keep Cruz whether or not you make the trade). Span is the same mold as Ellsbury, not alot of pop, but alot of speed, but Cruz has the potential of a 30-100 guy.
