Which low end closer to pick?(WHIR)

Postby kidsilk » Mon Feb 02, 2009 9:01 pm

I need to pick up a second closer in my slow online draft. It is a 15 team, 25 man roster, 5 keepers, 5x5 roto league.

The closers or possible future closers that are available are:

CJ Wilson
Troy Percival
Grant Balfour
Chris Perez
Ryan Franklin
Fernando Rodney
Jose Arredondo

I know slim pickins. Who should I take a chance on? I was leaning towards Wilson or Percival.

Chris Perez

He seems to be the closer of the future for the red birds but closers are tough this time of year.

Chris Perez for me as well, i think he's the most likely on that list to get the closer's job and has the stuff to keep it.

Perez, all the others might not close.
He once hit a ball between my legs so hard that my center-fielder caught it on the fly backing up against the wall.

If Satch (Paige) and I were pitching on the same team, we would clinch the pennant by July fourth and go fishing until World Series time.

I'd definitely get Perez as he has the best shot to close.

Percy is the only guy with a job right now ;-) , Perez is the future (maybe the near future).

Perez

I doubt Wilson closes over Francisco.

Perez is the "safe" choice if there is one in the bunch, but I think I'd opt for Balfour. To be honest I don't think he's even 2nd in line to Percival for save ops. I'd guess by the contract for "closer money" that Wheeler received he'd get the first opportunity, but given his previous struggles in the closer spot, I think he's better suited for 8th inning duty, which means Balfour would probably ultimately end up in the gig. Gotta love his ratios last year (though I'd expect regression this year... still if it's only mild his ratios would be fantastic) and his K rate was fanstic. The question with Balfour even going back to his Brewers days was not whether he had the stuff, but if he could find the strike zone. If you want to take the safer selection with some upside go Perez, if you feel like rolling the dice a little bit for a guy who's immediate ceiling I think is higher (but who's floor is lower) go Balfour. Either way, I'd avoid all others not named Perez or Balfour. Good luck!
