Trading Keepers - WHIR

Postby plapre3 » Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:11 pm

I'm trying to trade for depth for my last year expansion team with last year's league champ. He has several guys that he simply has no room for and I'm thinking a deal might make sense. He's looking for pitching and wants Santana or Kazmir, but I'm not dealing Santana for what he can offer.

He's offering something like this:
My Kazmir, Laporta, and Bumgarner for his Porcello and three of the following players (Ludwick, James Shields, Volquez, Soria, Rivera, Soto, Huff, Marmol).

Should I consider this deal or stay with Kaz? If I should, which 3 should I go with?
I'm thinking I can get him to do a deal that takes my Bumgarner and his Porcello out.

6x6 weekly HtH 14 team roto keeper (between 5 and 10 keepers (no time limits or costs), losing a draft pick for each after 5)
Offensive Categories: BA, OPS, RBI, HR, SB and Runs Scored.
Pitching Categories: W, S, ERA, K/IP, Quality Starts minus Losses, and WHIP
Offensive Starters: C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, 0F, 0F, 0F, UTIL
Pitching Starters: SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, RP
Bench: 10 spots
Minors: 5 "free" keepers. These players if are eligible to be kept without the loss of a draft pick and in addition to the max of 10.

My Keepers:
Johan Santana, Alfonso Soriano, Scott Kazmir, Corey Hart, Joe Nathan, Victor Martinez, Yovanni Gallardo, Zach Greinke
(Next 3: Michael Young, Alex Gordon, Ryan Zimmerman) - I'm willing to consider keeping these guys with the extra 2, but I think I like the picks in the draft better.

As for minor leaguers, I only get to keep 5. I have depth past the keeper spots (I really like Chacin and Bowden is pretty good, plus last year's draft class is part of our draft for this year) so I like the idea of dealing minors guys for major league talent. My thoughts are keeping them in the following order:
1) Madison Bumgarner (SP-SF)
2) Matt LaPorta (1B-Cle)
3) Colby Rasmus (OF-Stl)
4) Logan Morrison (1B-Fla)
5) Josh Vitters (3B-ChiNL)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6) Jhoulys Chacin (SP-Col)
7) Michael Bowden (SP-Bos)
Thank you all in advance and as always, leave a link.
I would trade Kazmir & Laporta for: Soto, Soria (or Marmol your preference but I think Soria is an absolute stud on an up and coming team) and Volquez.
I would try to get the minor league part out of the deal.
Good Luck.
I don't love this deal for you, but that is primarily because I don't love the players he is offering (opinions may vary).
Volquez is not good in 2nd half. Given his walk rate, his 2nd half numbers are closer to what I would expect this year. Plus, we all know Dusty kills young arms.
I would not pay for Huff's resurgent year, especially in a format that seems to put a premium on young players. If he is going to be thrown back into the draft, you'll probably be able to draft him.
Generally 30 yr old journeymen don't follow up the type of yr that Ludwick had. I'd expect his average to drop to the .260 level. He definitely has pop, but I wouldn't expect another 35 hrs.
Soria is great, but looking at your keepers, you already have Nathan. seems like overkill to keep 2 closers. Especially in a format that seems to devalue them a bit. (same case for rivera and marmol)
Shields is solid, but I'd rather have Kazmir in a k/ip league.
Not sure I'd keep Ludwick or Huff over Zimemrman or Gordon in this type of format
Don't get me wrong, it's not a terrible offer. But, I think there are question marks with the key components (Volquez, Huff, Ludwick). I like the idea of trading for some depth, just not loving this particular deal.
can you help?
I, also, would not do the deal. If I were you i may deal Kazmir for a few of his guys, but i would not give him Laporta or Bumgarner, much less both. I like his Porcello, Volquez, and Soto.
I'm not sure, but kazmir and laporta for shields, volquez, and soto could work out pretty well for you.
