draft philosophy/targets for 6th pick

Postby drtodddds » Sat Jan 31, 2009 3:38 pm

In a 10 team 5x5 roto keeper league, snake draft and I'll have the 6th pick.
WHO SHOULD I TARGET THE FIRST TWO ROUNDS?
I see the first 5 off the board in no particular order as H Ram, Reyes, A Rod, Pujols, Wright
If ANY of these slip to me it's a no brainer, but otherwise who to target at the 6th pick and then at 15th?
Rollins (shortstop depth is poor this year), Braun, Sizemore, M. Cabrera, Hamilton, Teixiera?
The second round I am thinking one of the 3 second basemen if available ..Kinsler, Pedroia, Utley in that order.

What do you think? Thanks for your help!

You won't see kinsler or utley inthe 2nd round....

i'd go with Mcab and then an OF'er on the way back.... maybe maybe Beltran?

Just depends you never know whats gonna happen.....

I agree if any of those first five fall to you than take them. If not than I think your choice is between MCab & Sizemore. They are both 26 this year so that should be good for a keeper. I think I would take MCab.

For your second round pick you can go a couple of ways:
1. you can take a 23 year old Longoria or 24 year old Upton. They are both a little bit of a reach but if they are keepers for the next 10 years than I think that makes them solid picks. I personally would not take Upton here but I could se myself taking Longoria.
2. you can take whoever falls to you between these (my ranks here): Teixeria, Howard, Kinsler, Rollins, Holliday, Berkman. One of them will be there at 2.5 and if not than take the stud who falls to you. I would find it highly unlikely that Teixeria or Howard would fall to you at 2.5 but the others is anybodies guess as to how the draft works out.

IF I knew that Teixeria or Howard would be available at 2.5 I would take Sizemore at 1.6 and then Teixeria/Howard. However I doubt they would be there at 2.5 so as I said I would go MCab at 1.6 and than at 2.5 I would rank the remaining players:
1. Kinsler- I put Kinsler here as I think most would rank him above the remaining players.
2. Longoria- I have not thought much about this but I would have a hard time passing on my stud 3B for the next 10 years at this pick.
3. Rollins- in a keeper draft this would be a worst case pick in my mind as it would mean: Hanley, ARod, Pujols, Wright, Reyes, MCab, Sizemore, Braun, Utley, Hamilton, Howard, Teixeria, Kinsler & Longoria all went in the first 14 picks. The reason I would be concerned of Rollins is he will be 30 this year and I would love to get a player in rd 2 that I would keep for the next 5-10 years and I doubt you would keep Rollins that long.

Miguel Cabrera and Kinsler if hes there on the way back. Utley says he'll be ready but I dont think 100% healthy

I am partial to Sizemore than MCab. Sizemore is a 5-tool Cat and will not finish that far behind in HR IMO. The one category MCab will be significantly higher than Sizemore in is RBI, but take in consideration that Sizemore will most likely lead in R and SB.
I would then follow with Kinsler...Utley...Longoria (if Tex, Howard are gone of course).
You maybe able to get Adrian Gonzalez in Rnd 3 for your first basemen or wait later in draft get a Joey Votto.

While I like both you can't forget that Cabrera will most likely finish with a substantially higher BA than Sizemore. Sizemore hit .268 last season and is a career .279 hitter while Cabrera hit .292 last season and is a career .309 hitter.
