Dealt Hamels for picks... now maybe Peavy too... WHIR

Keeper league. 12 teams. 5 keepers with a luxury tax for a 6th Scoring includes for hitters: R, H, 1b, 2b, 3b, HR, RBI, BB, SB, K, FPCT, AVG, OPS
pitchers: IP, W, L, CG, SHO, SV's, H, HR's, BB's, K's , Holds, ERA, WHIP
It is a head to head league.
6 teams make the playoffs with 2 byes

Keepers:
Pujols
Hamilton
Kinsler
Longoria

Hamels (to trade draft day)
Peavy (if I opt to trade him, Doc if not)

Here's the deal, I keep Cole Hamels and deal him and my next to last round draft choice for the other owners 1st round selection (round 7 because we use the first 6 rounds to select keepers) and his 3rd round selection. The pick is pick 8 in the 1st and pick 32 (3rd rounder). I now have picks 8,9,10,15,32,34 (6 picks in the first 3 rounds).

I did the deal because I don't see a huge drop off from Hamels to who will likely be available by the 8th selection. Some of the pitchers being tossed back into the draft are: Halladay, Lackey, Billingsley, Kazmir, Liriano, Shields, Dice-K (not a guy I want, but could push one of the others down) or Joba (owner is keeping Joba or Dice-K), possibly Beckett, as well as many others such as the typical injury risk guys (Burnett, Harden, Sheets, etc.), those guys being the top guys tossed back. There are also hitters who warrant going in the top 8 selections (Vlad, Russ Martin, Soto, B.J. Upton, and others). So really the deal ends up being Hamels and a next to last round flyer for possibly Bills or Kaz/and another player at pick 32, maybe David Price, Adam Wainwright, Yovani Gallardo, Matt Cain, etc. With that in mind, how does the deal look for me? I'm of the belief that it is best to invest in many arms, since the risk of injury is greater for pitchers then hitters.

The second of my two part question post is, should I keep Peavy and deal him for a 1st and 4th round selection? The first round selection is pick 4, and the 4th round selection is pick 44. Once again, looking at the names, I don't see a huge drop off from Peavy to what will be available (namely since I'd prefer keep Halladay over Peavy in this league setup anyways). With the 4th pick it is entirely conceivable Halladay could be there for my taking, and if not, I could grab a young arm or a consistant pitcher like Lackey and another arm at pick 44. Any thoughts on this question would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance, and as always, WHIR, just leave a link.

Just to add to my initial post and not unneccessarily bump it, it is important to note that I can only trade players I declare as keepers. Therefore I keep 6 and can only deal those 6 players. Essentially rosters are frozen post trade deadline beyond the keepers.

the trick is to get something for those nice keepers you don't have space for. I would have hated moving Hamels & certainly now would Peavy. you ended with an abundant supply of keepers, and you are getting a decent return for your 6th & 7th guys. It sure helps when you can already put a probable name with the numbers you are getting. keep it going just like you've laid it out

The Hamels deal definitely looks good. The peavy one is not bad but could turn out to be more of a lateral move, right? I think I'd roll the dice on that one anyway since the Padres look to be so abysmal this year.
He once hit a ball between my legs so hard that my center-fielder caught it on the fly backing up against the wall.

If Satch (Paige) and I were pitching on the same team, we would clinch the pennant by July fourth and go fishing until World Series time.

Thanks for the help.

I believe that having an overall solid and consistent pitching staff is better than having a couple of great pitchers and then drop off. That said, I like both deals for you, since you can build a nice staff with those picks, rather than just having two big names.

Hope that helps.

I think its a good deal for peavy since the padres just look like they are going to be AWEFUL this year. Peavy is a stud and he is going to pitch like a mad man out of hell so he can get out of san diego but that wont be for a while and possibly next offseason so I would take the deal and stock up

i really like your thinking, especially if you could end up with upton and billingsley or something similar.

normally i would never suggest moving cole.
