Keeper draft strategy (with minor leaguers)

Postby mj85 » Sat Jan 31, 2009 12:15 am

I have taken over a team with 8 MLB keepers (12 team 5x5 H2H) and 3 minor leaguers. For the major league keepers, I have a slew of good bats (e.g. Braun, Sizemore, Berk, Markakis...) but weak pitching (maybe keeping 2 of Zambrano, Lee, or Danks). On the minor league side, we can keep up 3 but I chose to keep two (Snider and Andrus). this is the first time that I have used a minor league system and my question is this: Should I go the safe route with a "sure" bat or go with the high upside pitcher?

I have the #2 pick and there will be guys like Feliz, Cahill, Hanson, and Anderson available on the mound, but there will also be hitters like Smoak, Alvarez, Alonso, and Beckham to choose from. 1) Hitters usually arrive quicker and 2) pitchers flame out a lot easier and have bigger injury risks. What is the best way to go here?

When reading quickly the big names on your team it seems like this is a team that could contend and I think a young pitcher will help more with that (more likely for a call up and 2009 fantasy help plus they could NOT flame out keeper wise too) and the weak pitching situation. You have two coveted minor leaguer hitters already.

I would say go pitcher 1st then depending on how many rounds this draft is load up heavy on hitters later in it

I would say Hanson over the others IMO

I think in this case you take the best available player and worry about trading some of your hitting for pitching. I'd go Alvarez, namely because he plays 3B and when he arrives on the Pirates he'll likely be a middle of the order bat (I also think it's possible he could arrive quickly). Good luck, you certainly have some intriguing options.

If you have a second and wouldn't mind, I could use some help on my question.

While I agree with the sentiment to generally value MILB hitters higher than MILB pitchers I think it's between Hanson, Anderson, and Alvarez. Hanson and Anderson are pretty close to arriving in the bigs and have ace potential which should override the fact that they're prospect pitchers.
He once hit a ball between my legs so hard that my center-fielder caught it on the fly backing up against the wall.

If Satch (Paige) and I were pitching on the same team, we would clinch the pennant by July fourth and go fishing until World Series time.
