Which Trade for a Second Baseman?

Postby Pedros Little Friend » Sat Jan 31, 2009 12:02 am

5x5 Roto league. 8 teams, 8 keepers per team. No limit on the amount of time you can keep a player. Redraft league (no auction values).

My keepers are: Wright, Quentin, BJ Upton, Kemp, Ortiz, Mauer, McLouth, and Tulo. The only problem is that Ortiz is a DH and I have 4 OF's, so I'm looking to trade one of them. Which of these deals would you do and which is the best for me?

Kinsler for Quentin or Upton OR
Phillips for Ortiz

Thanks.

Pedro, mi compadre, are these offers that have been made to you, or offers you would like to make?, if you're doing the making - try Kinsler for Ortiz. ;-)

IMO Cant see any Kinsler owner doing Kinsler for Ortiz now..feel free to try it but !+)

I would trade Quentin for Kinsler in a heartbeat, I think thats the best return in value but with your position issues, take the Phillips - Ortiz deal

Phillips for ortiz.
He once hit a ball between my legs so hard that my center-fielder caught it on the fly backing up against the wall.

If Satch (Paige) and I were pitching on the same team, we would clinch the pennant by July fourth and go fishing until World Series time.

These are offers that are on the table from me. I've already had extensive talks with these two owners. The one considering Quentin for Kinsler already turned down Kemp for Kinsler, and is more likely to take Upton, but he likes Quentin a lot. I haven't offered BJ yet, but I'm pretty sure he would do that from what he's told me. There's obviously no way he's going to accept Ortiz for Kinsler. The other owner, to whom I've offered Ortiz for Phillips, seems a bit less likely to bite, but said he's seriously considering it.

I ask because I've been thinking about pulling one of these offers off the table soon. Both owners have told me they want to get something done, and I don't want to end up with two second basemen :-D I'm waiting till the last minute to see which is the best deal I can get.

Thanks for the help. It's been pretty consistent with what I was thinking: the best deal is Quentin for Kinsler, then Ortiz for Phillips, then Upton for Kinsler.

Would you do BJ Upton for Kinsler? I'm not sure I could bring myself to do that. It's close.

Kinsler > Quentin
KInsler > Upton
Kinsler is a 1st round pick, I don't believe either Quentin or Upton are.

I don't have a problem with any of those trades, but Kinsler is the guy I would target. Ortiz's value has never been lower, so might as well hang on to him and hope he turns it around. I would prefer to trade Quentin for Kinsler, but trading Upton wouldn't be a bad deal by any stretch. Like was said earlier, Kinsler is a borderline first round talent and is still pretty young, so pull the trigger with confidence!

Another thought...have you thought about trying to use Nate M. as trade bait...Almost the converse of Ortiz...his value has never been higher, and most likely won't be. How about trying to deal him for Phillips or a guy like Brian Roberts, and hang on to Quentin and Upton. I like either of those options better than the deals for Kinsler.

In an 8 team league like that I like the idea of dealing Quentin for Kinsler the best. There are soooo many great OF's and such a little degree of seperation in some cases between the last OF on your roster and the best guy on the wire. There is however a very wide margin between 2B, and getting Kinsler who is a top 2 guy at that position would be great for your team. Plus the group of power/speed guys you have would be sick with him. I like Upton better than Quentin long term because he's got potential to go 25-50... not many can do that.
