He opens his front foot a little, but you have to if you want to give your hips enough room to fire. And if you freeze frame at the actual moment his foot plants, it is right around where most pros are. It's only on the follow through where it rotates more outward, which doesn't matter.

I'd say his mechanics are nearly perfect.

His front foot, before the swing. Sometimes it's more pronounced, look at 5:32 and 7:05 of the highlight video posted. Usually it looks very normal but on occasion it sticks out because of the angle. To what degree he opens his front foot is a function of the speed of the ball, and I assume HR Derby pitches are batting practice fastballs at every level.
